RE: Conference USA Track and Field Championships
There will be 2 running finals tonight - men's and women's 10,000 meters.

In the men's 10K, we have one runner - Travis Dowd, who is unlikely to score in a very deep and talented field.

In the women's 10K, Grace Forbes should win without a problem. I think that Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi could get as high as 6th in a deep group of runners. 5 of the top 6 finishers from last year's C-USA championships have returned.

Today, at 1:00, we'll have men's discus, with Sam Woodley expected to finish among the top 3. Jorge Hinojosa should score points. The winner of the hammer throw, Nick Hicks, has an outside chance to score.

Not a great time for Grace, ~34.2 min,) but looks like she only wanted to win the race.

She knew she could "jog" this one, since she still has the 1500 and 5000. Plus, she'll be racing another 10K at the NCAA West Regional at Arkansas in a couple of weeks.

Grace isn't listed in the 1500 on the heat sheets - it's also probably brutally hot so no need to overdo it. We must have a lot of people hurt as we're only running 20 athletes total (10 men, 10 women) in the 7 running prelims today. Or maybe they're limiting the number of entries?

It was my mistake listing her in the 1500.

No limit on entries. We have injuries, but mainly, we're entering those who have decent scoring opportunities.

Fresch is a football player (DB) - it looks like the jump was windy but not with a ferocious wind (+2.3). 23-6 is a pretty good jump for a 5-8 cornerback. I do think he will be part of a decent secondary next year for the Owls. We may have some other position groups that will be better than we normally see. The problem though is who is the QB and will the OL protect him?

Sorry - back to track - but I thought it was worth noting Fresch is a football Owl.

RE: Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
There still are points available tonight in the finals of the men's and women's steeplechase events.

Andrew Abikhaled has the fastest time of all entrants in the men's steeplechase, but likely will be in a battle with two Charlotte runners and one North Texas runner.

I don't think it's likely that we'll get points in the women's steeplechase, but senior Maddie Forbes has been running as well as any time at Rice, and she just might slip in for 7th or 8th.
