RE: Jelly returning for another season!
Yeah tons of players do what Jelly just did.
Vaden did it a while back.
Players on teams around the country do it every year.

I just hope he stays with his playing style and not give too much of it over to work on those things he was told he needed to work on. I remember when Vaden was evaluated and told to work on being more just a jump shooter. He did so to the detriment of his style of play, his game, as he psssed up 3ptrs to drive to the basket.

Yeah he really tried to do too much. He obviously, and very detrimentally, changed his game in his senior season.

RE: Jelly returning for another season!
Vaden I understood, Jelly not so much. As someone stated in other threads, NBA scouts have been....well scouting Jelly and I'm sure he has people informing him of his NBA chances.
I think even if Jelly has an awesome 22 season at best he's a low end 2nd Round pick but more likely will be a free agent player.
But good for him he tested the waters but I'm curious as to what he was told about his chances of being drafted or even playing in the league.

Well one thing he can't fix is his physical stature. Jelly isn't even 6 ft tall. Not saying he can't play in the NBA because of it but it just makes it harder to do so.

This is the new world of the NIL, so there are two reasons this happened and it was not bad advise
1 - He gets to talk to scouts the see his weaknesses to work on, nothing wrong with that at all
2 - This is also self-promotion for not only him, but for UAB. Anytime you stick NBA in a sentence with your player, it catches attention. Don't you think local businesses might want to hook up with a NBA player before they make it? This helps Jelly's visibility to promote his NIL nationally as well. At the same time, this keeps UABs name in the press as well. It is a win win.
He was never leaving UAB, and this wasn't the intent of him declaring. This was for him to learn, and to increase visibility for him and UAB.
It was great advice

Bingo.
Jelly COULD play in the NBA, but I think he will have to improve his shooting/scoring efficiency, cut down on turnovers, and show he can be a better play maker for his teammates. Playing better against higher level competition and bigger defenders would be a big deal for him too.

RE: Jelly returning for another season!
Now for the fun question: is this the best UAB team on paper since 03-04?
I would say yes.

RE: Jelly returning for another season!
Jelly definitely will have a shot at the nba but as said he will need to continue to improve some things. There are plenty of examples of similar players doing well in the league recently such as Kemba, Isaiah, etc. But to do so at that size, he has some more work to do.
I love what is on paper. Jelly and Gaines together could be ridiculous. The kids from ETSU are very nice additions that bring some things missing from last season. Quan and Ertel will be difficult to replace though. Their intangibles were off the charts beyond the stats.
The player I am eager to watch is Tavin. Time for him to elevate a notch.

I hear you regarding Tavin, but I feel the same way about Toney.

Of the returning players, I definitely feel like Toney and Lovan are the x-factors.
Lovan we especially needed more out of him consistently. When he picked it up at the very end of the year, he was an x-factor for us.
I am very excited about Toney's development, his athleticism, and his full court defense. Him and Gaines on the press will be a nightmare for opposing backcourts.

I can't argue with you there too much.
Kinnard, Delaney, Vaden, Sharpe, with Toney and Huffman, and AJ as a surprisingly good freshman..

RE: Jelly returning for another season!
This team will run through Jelly, so it is big to have a guy proven to get buckets when you need one who can create on his own.
But with so many proven scorers, with 1000+ career points, it will really stretch a defense. Any one of those guys could go off for 20+ on a given night, or you could get 10+ from 5 or 6 of them. Ertel and Quan will defensively be missed but we probably picked up a bit more versatility with the new transfers.

AK just spent 30 minutes in The Next Round and said the team going into 22/23 is better than last season.
Also got a quick mention of South Alabama basketball, I’ll take what I can get.

And Frank Holmes. And the highest-rated flying-ass-bump-deliverer in the history of the program, Jeremy Mayfield. And Zisis Sarikopolous. And the utter head case at the end of the bench who delivered . . . one NIT win. That team never recovered from the PD3 injury.
Jelly's return opens the door for using that final scholarship on one more impact player.

RE: Jelly returning for another season!
I loved Frank Holmes. He wasn't all that talented, but his effort was off the charts. He ran like a deer, and he never took a play off.
I was watching Paul Delaney when I had the biggest case of athletic envy I've ever had in my life. We were sitting in row three, just past the visitor's bench back toward the corner and PDIII pulled down a rebound directly in front of me. He absolutely flew the length of the court and thunderdunked. I was watching with awe. I remember very well thinking to myself "I wish I could move like that, just once in my life, to see what that feels like."
Most sincere envy.
He was a nice guy, too. I'll never forget Delaney coming out in Dragonman's costume, running the T-shirt cannon at the Women's Think Pink Breast Cancer game either.

PD3 was a hell of a player. One of the best we had during the Davis era.
