It’s just after 10 in the morning on Derby Day and I’m well into my 2nd Breakfast Julep. (Breakfast Juleps are no different from Dinner or Supper Juleps on the veranda. Just the time they are served) For Kentuckians, especially for those in Louisville, today is the culmination of a two week party to celebrate a two minute race.
For those who have never attended a Kentucky Derby, Country Philosopher
Irvin S Cobb says it best….
“Until you go to Kentucky and with your own eyes behold the Derby, you ain’t never been nowhere and you ain’t seen nothin’!”
Until you’ve stood, Mint Julep in hand, and sang “My Ol’ Kentucky Home” with 175K of your closest friends you don’t quite understand what it means to be a Kentuckian.
Here is a piece to help explain the Kentucky Derby and teach you how to party like a local.

That’s fantastic.
I use a premix Julep. You should be able to find Old Forester and Early Times premixes at the liquor store. I seldom have mint at home. (My parents used to grow it along the fence row just for Derby.) Most people at Church today will probably take it out and throw it away before drinking.. lol

Only in Kentucky on the First Saturday in May can an 80-1 long shot go from not even being in the race yesterday morning to winning the Kentucky Derby. He was only in the race because Ethereal Road scratched. If you watch the replay note how Rich Strike is pulling away from Epicenter and Messier at the wire.
That’s one for the ages. What a horse. If you saw the race, you just watched history

A VERY impressive ride for the rookie jockey there.

I saw the superfecta payed over $350,000 for a $1 bet. I assume since they had that amount listed, that someone actually bet it.

I hope you enjoy it.
Bought some organic mint at the grocery and soaked it in my simple sugar for about 4 hours (I didn't start early enough to soak overnight per your recipe). Opened the bottle of Maker's I had in my liquor cabinet....wow!
Thanks for the suggestion.
I wanted to share this amazing run by the 80-1 long shot Rich Strike in case you didn’t see it. His connections haven’t decided if they will run him in the Preakness. The decision is supposed to be made tomorrow.

Pretty impressive for a horse that was purchased for only $30,000.

Mike Leach said today that Rich Strike was proof of the added interest and validity of an expanded CFP. But hey, everybody knows the Pirate is flakey, and sometimes sneaky smart, which of course makes it hard to know when to take him seriously.
BTW, best Derby since Secretariat!

In a claimer at that. I believe he broke his maiden in that race as well. If you ever have an extra 30K to play, you could buy a future Derby winner.
The horse racing establishment in Kentucky, Florida and California hate this. At the Keeneland Sale in September 2020 there were nearly 2700 yearlings sold for an average of just over $132,000 each. They hate when a horse like Rich Strike wins a stakes race. When a $30,000 horse wins the Derby they are furious. It doesn’t make the industry look good. With all their breeding and bloodlines they didn’t pick this winner.
They call horse racing the “Sport of Kings”. This year’s Derby is proof that on occasion the peasants do rise up.

Rich Strike not going to Baltimore.
Skipping Preakness and going on to Belmont.
I know it’s a business decision but it sucks for the fans.
Bummer. A chance to continue a real Cinderella story, just when the country really needs it.

Ain’t that the truth. We could all sure use a feel good story about now. Personally I haven’t seen it this bad in over 40 years.
