Grinding athletics into dust
So CMU is cutting their track team, and now has to deal with a complaint filed accusing them of being racist in cutting it: https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=19512
So many things to unpack here. A track enthusiast abusing civil rights language to force CMU to bow to his wishes (even though their team was mostly White). Title IX has bled men's athletics dry in an effort to enforce equality rather than simply coming up with creative ways to promote women's athletics... except for the men's revenue sports. Title IX remains sacred as we let biological men win women's sporting events. Sports taking an outsized influence in entertainment spending and nearly taking over their institutions in terms of prestige and popularity. College costs encouraging parents to force kids into desperate bids to win scholarships. Declining demographics leading to shrinking colleges as the college grads refuse to reproduce. College budgets bloated on administrators and marketing campaigns and many things that aren't directly related or directly supporting classroom instruction.
And I'd add CMU failing, but I would never look a CMU track athlete in the eye and laugh at his predicament while his buddy is inking a contract to play football for a year and then run off to MSU if he does well enough to really cash in.
It's going to be rough times for college athletics, and none of this is good—for the athletes or institutions. And there is no easy or even apparent fix for it short of asking everyone to jump off the train for a season and think it through.
