UNC - UVA, Duke, NC State
NC State - UNC, Wake, Clemson
Pitt - BC, Syracuse, Louisville
Syracuse - BC, Pitt, UVA
UVA - VT, UNC, Syracuse
VT - UVA, Miami, Louisville
Wake - Duke, NC State, Louisville

My main quibble with the potential opponents listed by Andy Staples is that I believe that Miami-VT needs to be protected and then the changes cascade from there.

Quite similar to my conclusion, but i think Duke and Georgia Tech would gladly have other permanent rivals.

GT may not want Clemson and FSU every year. I'm sure they would like FSU more frequently, but they wouldn't want to be handicapped by a tougher schedule than everyone else.

In any event, the ACC should first focus on getting a change in the ccg rules. This is irrelevant unless they get that to happen.

Apologies if this duplicates any other setups posted here, but I've spent a lot of time looking at a divisionless ACC setup. Here's my latest proposal. Let me know what you think!

FSU/GT as annual would be nice for FSU, but less so for GT.

That's already been done informally. After gaining feedback from the 10 FBS conferences, the Football Committee recommended that CCG deregulation be passed as a noncontroversial measure, which means it has unanimous support among those 10 conference. (It doesn't need unanimous support, only 8 of their combined 15 votes ) The 10 FBS conferences are the only Council members who can vote on it, so it's a done deal, all but official. It will probably become official on May 18, when the Council next meets.

Let Free Shoes U have BC as a permanent rival.

Canes will take Louisville and (hopefully) less chance for frigid weather.

VPI is fine, though. Football matters in Blacksburg, Va. (which is why the Hokies will end up in the SEC).

The nerdlinger list is a pretty good one, even if there’s no Pitt-Miami.

Pitt isn’t among Miami’s top-3 ACC rivals (FSU, VT, BC) anyway, so that shouldn’t be a requirement.

That’s a good setup. I still believe Pitt v Miami (rather than BC v Miami or Pitt v BC) has more value.

Yep, it's already a done deal that's why they let that deregulation news slip out. Conferences have known about this since the end of April

This makes the most sense to me. Admittedly I don't know as much about the old Big East schools rivalries sans VT/Miami and BC/Cuse but it looks like every school has at least 2 rivalries protected here and the biggest football brands have 3 protected except for maybe VT... is Louisville a rivalry? IDK.

Miami's top three ACC rivals are (in order):

1) FSU

2) FSU

3) FSU

We've played Boston College once since 2012, but I've yet to hear even one Cane fan say, "sure wish we could play those guys again."

I'm curious what the GT people think...sure they are rebuilding but so are we, I think they might prefer to have an annual FSU game? It's not like most of the rest of the ACC slate is fearsome, even if FSU returned to winning ways. On the other hand there are other schools closer to Atlanta and they have more history with the rest of the ACC, so maybe they'd prefer someone else.

Frank's is my first choice but I'd be fine with your proposal as well, Louisville & FSU have a bit of history. I'd be fine with NC State or VA Tech too, so long as Miami and Clemson remain the other two.

I would agree with that. I think FSU fans would agree with that. But FSU's President pretty much said he didn't want to play Georgia Tech as strongly as could be implied without saying it out loud.

The only time UVA-GT has had sizzle was when UVA had George Welsh and GT had George O'Leary (first as DC, then as HC). Beyond that there's no pulse to UVA-GT. I think GT would even take WF over UVA.

What's that about?

Will say if the Noles sober up from their five-year stupor and get back to rollin' like the old days, their fans will fill up half of Grant Field no problem.

Think that's one reason why GT has the edge on Miami for an SEC expansion invite: Atlanta is much easier to get to and darn near every SEC school has a boatload of alumni within 45 minutes or so of Tech's campus.

The ACC permanent rivals would look like this with composition below:

Team Opponent 1 Opponent 2 Opponent 3
Boston College: Pittsburgh Virginia Syracuse
Clemson: Georgia Tech Florida State NC State
Duke North Carolina Miami Wake Forest
Florida State Miami Georgia Tech Clemson
Georgia Tech Clemson Florida State Virginia Tech
Louisville Wake Forest Pittsburgh Syracuse

NC State Wake Forest North Carolina Clemson
Pittsburgh Boston College Louisville Syracuse
Syracuse Pittsburgh Louisville Boston College

Wake Forest Louisville Duke NC State

Andy Staples’ proposal is 100% trash. Agreed.

A quick fix on yours is BC playing UVA while Miami plays Duke. You can flip that so Miami plays BC and UVA plays Duke.

Agree on both changes. UVA absolutely has to play Duke. Louisville's choices should be prioritized blast since they are the newest.member.

FSU's President considers Atlanta to be already in-market for FSU and he wants to expand FSU's reach to markets they're not already in.

The biggest football brands getting 3 rivals may seem unfair, but it allows the "top" schools to have the best strength of schedule, etc and gives the league the best chance to put teams in the playoffs (in a 4 or in a 12 team system).

RE: ACC eliminating divisions 2023
In a fourteen/fifteen team league, would 5-4 work better? 5 permanent rivals opens up a lot of spots and then you can still rotate the other 8 teams to see them twice every 4 years.

This may be my SEC brain thinking though (there is a thread on the SEC forum about divisionless scheduling that suggests 6-3). Does the ACC have enough "rivalries" to do 5 permanent? I'd assume yes for some schools, but I honestly don't know if that's enough.
