I hear you, hate to keep beating the dead horse as well and don’t want to disrespect these “kids”, but I’m not sure how any of the commits so far move the needle? High school kids that you recruit and then realize aren’t up to this level can be nudged along and recruited over. The new stipulations of the portal lock you in and guarantee their scholarship until they’re done at KSU, so you really need to know who and what you’re getting.

Quote: Student-athletes who transfer will be guaranteed their financial aid at their next school through graduation, the Division I Board of Directors decided Wednesday. The board met virtually.

That change and other adjustments to transfer rules recommended by the Division I Transformation Committee are intended to provide greater clarity for student-athletes and member schools within the transfer landscape across all sports. The rules changes are effective immediately.

"The decision to adopt the transfer proposal today reflects the Board's commitment to enacting transformational changes in college sports," said Jere Morehead, president at University of Georgia and chair of the Board of Directors.

NCAA rules now will require any school that considers athletics when awarding scholarships to transfer student-athletes to provide that scholarship for the rest of a student's five-year eligibility or until they complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree, unless the student transfers again or engages in professional athletics opportunities.

Treymon Echols (WR)

2021 Butler Community College (7 games played 15 catches 130 yards 1 TD)
2022 Hutchinson Community College (11 games played 14 catches 209 yards 2 TDs)

At least we beat out North Alabama again, and Tennessee-Martin for a community college’s 4th or 5th WR.

Obviously, I have no idea whether any of these new players may be really good, but it sure seems like mere 'roster filling".

True, the portal does lock a school in, but don't most schools honor a scholarship beyond the year-by- year basis anyway, unless the player "flunks out" or engages in serious misconduct?

Last I read, technically no such thing as a guaranteed 4
year scholarship. These are basically “signed contracts” done on a yearly basis. I don’t know that a school would “turn out” a kid who wasn’t performing up to expectations but I do know of coaches “strongly encouraging” kids to seak playing time at another school.

They’re not required to, it’s a year to year renewable. With the portal being what it is at some schools players have been recruited over and encouraged to seek a new home.

RE: 2023 Football Recruiting
True, scholarships are for only one year at a time, but for decades it was considered unethical to not renew a scholarship based upon the player's ability. A few coaches would, but it was frowned upon. Eddie Sutton was one coach who did. I'm sure it happens more than it used to, but most coaches will just be honest with a player and tell him or her that they won't ever play except in mop up time and help them find a new school if they don't want to stay anyway. Coaches would not renew if a player was underperforming academically or had an attitude problem or committed lots of infractions, things of that nature. Under the new rules once a player enters the portal a school is not obligated to take him back if that player decides he'd rather stay,

I don't see much in the group recruited so far by KB -seems like we're getting in the game late. I guess I will hold off judgment until next year- PH I believe recruited Crum who was stellar in HS, Not sure he would have developed under PHs leadership. I'm afraid that next year could bee a long season.

RE: 2023 Football Recruiting
The late start is not the fault of the new coach. He had to build a staff and it was already late in the game. I see the lack of talent and it hurts but this year is just a write off no matter what we expect. We can complain and complain some more, but that will not change anything. I would assume that we had about 85 bodies on the team and we lose approximately 22 to transfers and graduation. Let us hope that what is left, is coachable and reasonable talented. After all, they have been a part of a good system.

There were quite a few other schools making coaching changes at that time that didn’t struggle through the transition like we did. But other ADs had a plan in place, brought in their guy and lined up the coaching staff in a reasonable amount of time. We muddled through those precious first two weeks or so. Without a couple holdover coaches and their keeping a few of Coach Lewis’s commits it would be an an absolute disaster. We can all say it was going to be a wasted season anyway, but that’s not the point; you dig a hole and good luck getting back out. Coach Hazell had his magical season and bolted, turning it over to Coach Haynes. A bad year turned into a few more and he was gone. I’m afraid we just dug a hole that will take awhile to dig out. If they couldn’t convince some kids in the portal to jump in and join a team that’s been decent recently and with obvious playing time for the taking with a new coach supposedly on the rise, how the hell will they get any to come in next year coming off a 2-10 season?

Crum definitely thrived under Coach Lewis because he was an offensive guy with a system that was perfectly suited for him.

This is weirdly unsettling... All the recruits listed with their stars and NIL value. Our recruiting class has an average NIL value of 7.7k... and Akron's is 7.6k. Get rekt you broke a$$ zips. Glad we've kept the wheel from your or you'd have pawned it by now.

Also weirdly unsettling is they have us at #126 behind Grand Valley State and a handful of FCS programs. 07-coffee3

RE: 2023 Football Recruiting
Kay Thomas (RB) Kansas, but transferred from Minnesota the previous year, so not sure if he’ll have to sit out a year. He had a very good RS-Freshman season at Minny in 2021 with 166 carries for 824 yards and 6 TDs then left for Kansas and had 162 yards and 2 TDs on 53 carries. Finally a player that has had some success at this level! Though he’s now on his 3rd program in 12 months, I don’t think Coach Kenni would be bringing him in if he had baggage. As a freshman he was the bowl game offensive MVP against WVU when he went for 144 yards on 21 carries and a TD. Also, as a HS senior, rushed for 3,009 yards and was named the 2019 Gatorade Athlete of the Year in Kansas.

Now that looks like a good get. Over 800 yards in 9 games as a freshman in the big 10. 3 teams in 12 months is one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is (including the redshirt year) 2023 will mean he's with the same coach 3 of the last 4 years.

Curious if he sits this year since he just transferred twice. Also, I saw it reported he somehow has 3 years of eligibility left. I know Covid confused everything and they gave out an extra year if you played that season because not everyone played a full year. But he didn’t play that season, then played two, how does he get 3 more?

But I remember reading Lewis didn't really want Crum, either. Tried to run him off. But the kid opted to stay and fight for his spot. Won't find many kids like that anymore.

Maybe not at BG, but inherited him at KSU from Coach Haynes and evolved into the guy that unseated Auburn transfer Woody Barrett and never looked back.

Per 247sports, he is eligible immediately.
