Carry's been great, except for his shooting. His overall % in conference games isn't bad (42%) but his 25.& % in 3-point shooting not so much. Of course, Jacobs (33.6% and 15.8%) has been worse. I note that in conference play Davis is 3 for 32 in 3-point attempts. How is that even possible??? I note that Odusipe has played in only 2 conference games. Did I miss something? Is he injured or sick?
My guess on Odisupe is he's just 4th on the big man rotation behind Payton, Hornbeak, and Gillespie. Payton's emergence leaves less minutes. With how little Gillespie is used I do wonder if Odisupe had been healthy at the beginning of the year if Gillespie would've been redshirted.
Excellent point, A-Z. I believe Gillespie has elements of both Hornbeak and Payton in his game, and like most freshmen bigs should have been red-shirted. But as we've seen over the years at the mid-major level that is really hard to do. You need 3 for fouls. Next year, with Thomas gone (he plays a lot inside) Hornbeak/Payton/Gillespie should make a strong trio, especially if one of them can evolve into a creditable 3-point shooter.
Don't know how good the walk-on bigs are, but maybe one of them should have been the emergency third guy. But in defense of the staff, we can see how long it took Payton to emerge, and if he had not Odisupe would have been the most likely next man up if he was back healthy, then Gillespie.
My guess is, if either of the walk-on bigs show any level of promise, then Odisupe is likely gone after this season. Frankly, glad to see Kent trying to get walk-on bigs for several reasons.
First, mid-major bigs not only need a redshirt year, but just 'mature' a bit later than guards and wings. A slow developer now could be a welcome 10-minute reserve in a year or two. From what I've heard the redhead big is a good shooter, and the other kid is a nice wide-body. We'll see what happens down the road.
The 6-8 freshman signee at Spire is a shooter, but I don't know if he has much else to his game, or if he is a pure shooter or just a streaky shooter. Would love to see Kent find a Jaylin Walker type wing who even if he's not hot, still provides enough defense and rebounding to stay on the floor. Kent has signed a lot of 'shooters' under Senderoff, but they just don't survive in his system without providing a more well-rounded game. Kent's usually better with 'scorers' over 'shooters' -- that's my opinion.
