Coyotes move in with Arizona State
The arena will seat around 4,700 for NHL games:

And now we await for what is the whole show - whether the Tempe Arena goes through.

Surprised the NHL is cool with this but I don't know how good attendance for Coyotes games are.

The NFL let the Chargers play in a 30,000-seat soccer stadium for 3 years. But, construction of SoFi Stadium had already begun before that.

In Arizona, they don't even have approval from the city or financing lined up for the proposed Coyotes project. And there are always political issues and possibly lawsuits to try and block big projects.

Yeah, the only way a new arena in Tempe will be profitable for the Coyotes will be if they get significant public funding. The odds that local/state politicians are fine dedicating over a hundred million for them, a bad team while the crosstown Suns are killing it, is unlikely.

Pro leagues have historically been willing to accept a weird stadium/location arrangement only when relocation is involved (Chargers in LA, Oilers/Titans in Memphis/Nashville, Hurricanes in Greensboro). Assuming they can't get a new arena off the ground I doubt the league will have a stomach for that kind of arrangement much longer, and that's when the likes of Houston and Kansas City will enter the conversation as a viable replacement.

AFAIK, there is no billionaire out there telling the NHL, "I want to buy the Coyotes and move them to ______, and I'm ready to hand over $400 million (or whatever), let's do it now."

That might be why they are giving the current ownership plenty of time to stumble around in Arizona.

Quebecor. Quebecor even posted the required expansion amount for their bid to be tabled.

But the Bruins owner (who has the most pull of any owner) absolutely despises Quebec City for whatever reason and the NHL itself doesn't want QC either.

But Quebec City would 100% buy the Coyotes if given the opportunity.

Of course, if Mr. Houston billionaire swooped in, the NHL would likely push for a sale because Houston is as if not more desirable a market as Arizona. But Mr. Quebec billionaire is different because the NHL doesn't find the market desirable.

I'd prefer Quebec or Houston as a relocation city. Born and raised in Houston, I'd love to see the Aeros resurrected as an NHL franchise. That being said, I'd rather see a 4-conference league (over 2-conference, 4-division league) with a Canada-only conference.

I'd settle for Arizona > Houston and Florida > Quebec.

Conference Alignment
Atlantic: Boston, Carolina, New Jersey, New York (I), New York ®, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington
Canada: Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Midwest: Buffalo, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, Pittsburgh, St. Louis
Pacific: Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle

Playoffs
16 teams (4 division winners + 12 at-larges)
Teams ranked #1-#16 by win percentage (then other tie-breakers)
#1 vs #16, #2 vs #15, etc.

In the Canes case, as I recall, the RBC Center (w/ ncsu bball) was a done deal but was under construction (ncsu still had a place to play) so the Canes played in Greensboro till the arena was finished.

Quebec went ahead and built the arena. Montreal despises Quebec City but politically, it wouldn't be prudent to publicly oppose it. The NHL wants nothing to do with Quebec City because of the province's racist, draconian laws.

The All-Canada division was pretty cool during the Covid season, but I think it would be a lot of travel if it was permanent. It's a 5 1/2 hour flight time between Quebec City and Vancouver.

The NHL is already in Quebec... What difference would it be if they had two teams in Quebec?

Are they going to adjust the profit sharing formula? Not really fair if everyone else is selling on average 16,000 tickets per game yet Arizona can sell out every game yet only bring in 4,700 per game, how it that fair?

I get that the Thrashers had an owner lined up to move the team to Winnepeg, but I still can't get over the lengths Bettman has gone through to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix.

I get tired of northerner's saying the NHL doesn't belong in the South.

Pretty lame they’re playing in an arena that seats 4,700 people.

More importantly, it's a mess for TV because it means East Coast teams are playing at 10 PM Eastern or later, and West Coast teams play away games in the early evening.

This would be better:

Pacific: Vancouver, Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Las Vegas, Calgary, Edmonton
Central: Colorado, Houston, Dallas, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Winnipeg, Nashville, Chicago
Atlantic: Carolina, Tampa Bay, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington
Northeast: Quebec, Montreal, Columbus, Boston, Ottawa, Buffalo, Toronto, Detroit

If Arizona stays, no change to the Central. If Florida stays, have them swap with Pittsburgh.

“Swap Florida with Pittsburgh” is a total non-starter. If you followed hockey, you’d do know Pittsburgh’s top rivals are Washington, Philadelphia, New York, etc.

I have to agree; although, the Penguins and Blue Jackets had a brewing rivalry.

As for the thread at hand, the city I'd like to see get a team is Portland. It feels ripe as any for a hockey franchise and would be instant rivals with Seattle and Vancouver.

I always felt the Coyotes should move to SLC, but I'm sure Portland has a few more billionaires.
