NIL Money at NIU
I'm launching a company in the golf space, and talked to an NIU athletics rep at the Cure Bowl about lining me up with the correct contact at NIU athletics/golf to facilitate a possible small payment or two to our golf team players later this year. Nothing big, just some walking around $ for a tweet or two so they can ping their Big10 golf team buddies and say they got some NIL action as an NIU golfer. Just trying to be a good alumni.

What I'm being told now, after weeks of discussion, is that "there is no real direct way currently at NIU to easily contact a team/athlete and facilitate a quick and easy NIL deal." - YIKES.

My contact said it 60% a state of Illinois-law issue, but that NIU also has as of yet to get out of its own way on the issue. He said several Illinois schools including NIU were getting their butt kicked on the NIL issue, and other midwest P5 and G5 programs were way ahead on funneling $, even if small payments, to their athletes.

Shame on Illinois for sucking as usual, shame on Sean T. "new infield turf - yay" Frazier for not handling the issue better. My contact said a friend at Loyola athletics found a nice workaround vis-a-vis the state law and admin red tape, he is putting me in touch.

The state of Illinois, and especially the NIU athletics department, need to get the NIL pipeline smoothed out ASAP.

(if someone knows otherwise, please educate me, I'm going off of direct feedback from one NIU (knowledgeable) staffer.)

Contact Fatty's and find out how they worked that sandwich name deal with Rocky Lombardi??

(and ... to Dog Fan ... "Can NIU - and especially NIU Athletics - do ANYTHING correctly?") Not much.

They keep winning football games, everything else is secondary? More passionate and effective leadership would be great though. Fingers crossed soon.

RE: NIL Money at NIU
Seriously this time, I for one think what you're trying to do is admirable and for good reason(s). I ask, though, what the hangup specifically was with the state. Perhaps a call to your state legislator?

I, again seriously, wonder how it was that Lombardi got the NIL deal with Fatty's. Or was that a "showcase" event for STF?

And just generally, if any businesses or other alumni are interested, is there a quick way to measure "reach" by checking the "likes" on a student-athlete's Twitter page? Is anyone doing that? I cannot see anything wrong with the ADept taking requests and passing them along, or if not, the NIU Foundation or HAF. Has to be some kind of clearinghouse/linkage that makes it easier. Unless that's where the state law snag is.

Lot's of questions, few answers.

Anyway, again, +.

None of the NIU golfers, as with many college golfers I'm sure, have many social media followers to speak of. The payment would reflect that, and we could put a small promo spend behind the postings. A small marketing bump, a small NIL needle mover for the program, quick win/win that the school certainly needs more of.

Like I said, sounds like the Illinois law makes things a bit messy or unclear, and that NIU leadership is doing a worse job than some other Illinois schools at navigating the issue. Frazier needs to create a NIL communication/booking pipeline, and then do a blanket email to all corp.-related alumni as a NIL explainer and invitation.

I do believe that NIL.was a downstream by-product of the lawsuit of the Northwestern players v NCAA. I do believe it was a labor law issue. Which brings me to my main point of why isn't STF asking a couple of Professors that teach Labor Law at NIU Law School what the best course of action to open NIL to student athletes.

What a surprise NIU leading from behind. So embarrassing that this has been the case with the entire University for 25 years in athletics and academics. So much potential and so little gained (actually mostly lost). With current President, I have no hope for anything changing. Just hanging on with no forward looking thought or plan.

It seems to be the norm now in Illinois Higher Eduction which is to maintain. Getting to the next level is a thing of the past.

Why did NIU let ISU leave them in the dust? U of I has record enrollment (granted with thousand of Chinese imports). Loyola came back from being almost shut down to new heights over the past 20 years. Granted EIU, SIU, WIU are even worse shape than NIU, but not everyone is doing poorly. Schools with great leadership move forward still even in these times. NIU just has not had a good leadership is soooooo long.

School went down academically, campus makeup changed as many of the suburban types went out of state for same price even less, campus overbuilt and parts turned to crap as enrollment went down. They have all played on each other. Not hard to see. Leadership may not be a great help, but there are outside factors beyond the school itself. Let's be honest. NIU was second fiddle to the schools kids are going to today as they have been for it's existence. Something many can't admit. It's just the gap has widened.

NIU was only second fiddle to U of I in-state until being lapped by ISU.
Leadership is definitely the issue with creatures like Eddie Williams almost
singlehandedly destroying DeKalb as a college town.

That will reduce NIU enrollment by another couple of hundred over the next few years.
Hits just keep on coming. Looks like JB was was a big part of this happening. I thought
our current President was JB's buddy. Looks like NIU got aced out again.

The fact that something apparently fell into place at Loyola COULD be because it is not a state school. That alone might have something to do with it.

Yes, lapped by ISU. But kids have always been leaving the state for Iowa, IU and even WMU especially for certain curriculum. This state NEVER had a B player to UI. Only thing close were perhaps Business and a few other programs at NIU.

Now you have the likes of Alabama and Nebraska throwing everything at anything to increase their schools academically. When 15+ kids from various hs in Chicagoland are going to Alabama with scholarships says alot for where those schools stand, or stood.

From US News:

University of Alabama's ranking in the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #148. Its in-state tuition and fees are $11,620; out-of-state tuition and fees are $31,090.

Agreed. My daughter got instate tuition at Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, South Carolina and basically $0 tuition at Alabama, and the instate tuition of all these schools is $6k a year lower than Illinois schools. It was a no brainer to decide where to go. So much so that we decided to move out of Illinois altogether. My leadership comments on Illinois extend not only NIU, but to Illinois state government and agencies as well. They allow Illinois universities to have bloated bureaucracy, too many redundant programs and location, millions of dollars on useless locations like Governors State, Chicago State and University of Springfield with no real student populations. I just disagree on NIU not being the U of I alternative. It was the case in 1980 to 1990 during the high levels of HS graduates in Illinois. And NIU was way ahead of ISU in programs and student population at the peak, and close to being a top 100 public university (peaked out in the high 120 ranger) To see NIU fall so far is just disheartening.

+1000. They really need to close 1 or 2 schools in the next couple years. Spread whatever is left over to the other public universities
