Rice Approves New Sports Analytics Major
Building off it's inaugural semester offering the Introduction to Baseball Analytics course, beginning this coming Fall semester Rice Sports Management will be offering a new major in Sports Analytics. This should only solidify it's #1 national ranking among undergraduate sports management departments...and keep in mind that well under 50% of those currently majoring in Sports Management are student-athletes...

Good. Something that helps Rice both academically and athletically.

Funny... We suggested something like this years ago.... a throw-back to the old days where the 'math department' would help a football coach with down and distance tendencies etc etc etc. This is now big business... I hope we are leveraging it not only to recruit guys, but also to call plays/pitches etc

Only one problem...it's obviously not helping the Owls to win.

Maybe with the right coaching staffs who knew how to use such data and recruit and retain student athletes that could do the same?

Do we know anyone like that?

It's a good addition. Why not add Sports Management next? Give the athletes something in which they can really take interest.

??? Sports Management is already a major and has been for 10+ years now. And, again, student-athletes makes up well under 50% of those who major in Sports Management.

Athletes are a small percentage of the study body as a whole. If they represent almost 50% of those who choose it as a major, it must be a popular degree path for them. It's too bad Rice took so long to offer it.

Compared to most larger schools, our percentage of athletes is huge, so it's a good thing they are student-athletes.

Again, the percentage is more like 40% student-athletes, and the major has been available for quite some time. Before the Sports Management department was created some 10 years ago, there was the Kinesiology department, where many of the athletes gravitated. Rice is not lagging in this area. Rather, we're leading as reflected in our #1 national ranking the past 3 years.

#1 is usually good.
