Are Emoni Bates and Penny Hardaway talking? Where things stand with Memphis basketball

Things picked up more steam Monday when Grind City Media's Chris Vernon had this to say on The Ringer's "The Mismatch" podcast.
"Dude, I was told that they were – that, like, the dad (Elgin Bates) and them – I don't know if this is news, so God bless, go ahead and aggregate. No, they were all over at Memphis yesterday. I think the kid’s, like, out of options. Like, he was gonna transfer, and then the other places, like, filled spots and whatever.
"He’s still not anywhere. He’s still not anywhere as a transfer. He’s not going to some league or something. I think the kid might end up back at Memphis somehow."
Multiple sources confirmed Elgin Bates was at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center (the team's practice facility) visiting with members of the Tigers' coaching staff on June 17. Elgin Bates did not respond to text messages from The Commercial Appeal.
Sources also told The Commercial Appeal the chances of Hardaway being open to Bates' return are currently quite slim, at best. But that doesn't mean things can't – and/or won't – change.
During an Instagram Live session on Wednesday, Bates said he plans to announce his next move "by the end of this month (June)." Soon after entering the portal in April, he revealed his six finalists were Louisville, Michigan, DePaul, Arkansas, Seton Hall and Eastern Michigan. Bates averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 18 games (13 starts) as a freshman at Memphis in 2021-22.
Remember, nothing is impossible when it comes to Hardaway and recruiting. Stay tuned.
