Emoni Bates and other what ifs Memphis basketball, Penny Hardaway might be facing

When asked about it, opinions from sources around the Tigers' program have been mixed. Some feel it makes a lot of sense. Some do not. Some believe it could work but only if both sides can agree on a path forward that best sets Bates up for success.

The Commercial Appeal also spoke with a source with very close ties to Bates about the potential of a reunion.

"Great question. I'm not sure. That's Emoni's call," the source said. "His focus right now is getting stronger and taking his time to make the best decision for him. Definitely can't rule anything out. Until a decision is made, anything is possible."

i personally would LOVE for Bates to come back, and each day that passes i think it's more likely. IF he were 100% for Louisville then why hasn't he announced and signed?

The talent was/is evident, and i think he plays hard. The shortcomings were primarily the result of being 12 years old trying to play high D1 as the feature.. i would expect if he comes back he would be ONE of two features along with Davis, and would get the 15 shots a game he needs. he knows the system and the staff, and the staff knows him. he can certainly shoot the 3, and has excellent versitility.

For all his baggage he's an unusual talent, and everyone has baggage. perhaps its better to add baggage to the team you recognize and already understand?

Maybe, but my gut tells me it wouldn’t be.

Me as well. With Davis, it would be an ideal situation.

Okay I get it. Everybody including me is a fan of cph. No shame in that. Some fans think Penny is a finished product and that he is already a great coach. I don't believe that. I believe he is a good coach. He is a great recruiter, and his teams have improved late in each season. A great coach comes out at the first of the season with a disciplined savvy team. When cph starts doing this there will be much less drama and a better overall result. He had that opportunity this past season, but he blew it. Penny is smart, he learns, I just hope he gets enough time to learn enough to be the coach he is becoming. Like Tommy West said when he was fired at Clemson, "I am a lot better coach now than when you hired me."

Nobody is saying Penny is a great coach.
You say he destroyed the team.

Destroyed the team this past season, and damaged the program for the coming season. Starting Bates and benching Noley and Lester at the beginning of last season destroyed team chemistry and though the chemistry eventually improved it never achieved what it could have been. This choice also contributed to the transfer of Noley this offseason. These were coaching errors which I believe CPH will learn from. In the long run i believe his mistakes now will improve him in the future. We must all be willing to recognize those mistakes and encourage his growth into becoming the greatest Tiger coach of all time. At present is he good and is beginning that transition.

Every team I have ever played on was team first. Nolley and some others obviously didn't buy in. Not sure the team was destroyed.

Are Emoni Bates and Penny Hardaway talking? Where things stand with Memphis basketball

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/s...700389001/

Things picked up more steam Monday when Grind City Media's Chris Vernon had this to say on The Ringer's "The Mismatch" podcast.

"Dude, I was told that they were – that, like, the dad (Elgin Bates) and them – I don't know if this is news, so God bless, go ahead and aggregate. No, they were all over at Memphis yesterday. I think the kid’s, like, out of options. Like, he was gonna transfer, and then the other places, like, filled spots and whatever.

"He’s still not anywhere. He’s still not anywhere as a transfer. He’s not going to some league or something. I think the kid might end up back at Memphis somehow."

Multiple sources confirmed Elgin Bates was at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center (the team's practice facility) visiting with members of the Tigers' coaching staff on June 17. Elgin Bates did not respond to text messages from The Commercial Appeal.

Sources also told The Commercial Appeal the chances of Hardaway being open to Bates' return are currently quite slim, at best. But that doesn't mean things can't – and/or won't – change.

During an Instagram Live session on Wednesday, Bates said he plans to announce his next move "by the end of this month (June)." Soon after entering the portal in April, he revealed his six finalists were Louisville, Michigan, DePaul, Arkansas, Seton Hall and Eastern Michigan. Bates averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 18 games (13 starts) as a freshman at Memphis in 2021-22.

Remember, nothing is impossible when it comes to Hardaway and recruiting. Stay tuned.

Hate to say it but a Bates return and success story may the best thing that could happen for both sides.
I don't think Penny will completely continue to ignore the highschool recruits. So whenever he does decide to go back to recruiting long term guys, having a Bates success story will help. Not to say that Bates will be determinant on Penny's success but some kids do look at that crap. I rather his turn around happen here vs somewhere else, ESPECIALLY if the turn around involves CPH telling pops to get the hell on.

His dad has definitely made things more difficult than it should have been last year.

THIS. It is our reason for excitement/hope. This also makes us a threat (to win big) at all times. And this is the NCAA's disdain for Penny.

IN PENNY WE TRUST
