Good list, but I’m not sold on Iona or Belmont. Iona because minus Pitino they’re irrelevant and have a tiny gym. Belmont because they would have been added by now; the timing would be strange. Seems they would have been invited with Loyola.

The other two make sense for a variety of reasons. I’d add Delaware to that list as well. If Holy Cross wanted to commit, they’d be an excellent addition. I just don’t see it happening.

I don't know how likely it is but I'd love to see W&M get the call up. From an academic prestige standpoint, you can't get a better pick at this athletic level. But is that enough to warrant a move by the A-10. Probably not.

And let's not pretend that Football in the MAC is a great experience. They play all their Oct. and Nov. games on Tuesday to Thursday night. That's why they have some average crowd sizes less than 15,000.

Also, most posters seem to overlook the success Temple has had in football in the AAC. Let's not forget that Temple had the lowest all time win percentage in the BCS conferences and continued to suck right up until they were thrown out of the BE.

They got their act together after that and have won the AAC before. It just wasn't in a year their champion got the G5 access bid. I fully expect Temple, Memphis and SMU to be the main programs challenging for the G5 access spot after Houston, Cincy and UCF leave for the B12.

If Temple were to leave for the MAC they'd be throwing all that they've gained away just to have some familiar A10 basketball opponents back on the schedule again.

Exactly... And the thought that Temple would leave their 7 million dollar ESPN spot, along with the academic neighborhood in the American Athletic, to become the 16th member (and 3rd Philly school) in the A10 to go with the MACademic conference, is kinda outlandish.

What is the A-10 profile?

Sweet 16 or better in Men's basketball, not an embarrassment in academics. Maybe has football.

RE: A-10 open to 16th member
Gotta love how a click-bait title leads to a full thread like this.

The A10 isn't expanding. McGlade was asked "are you open to a 16th member?" and responded with something along the lines of "we're always discussing membership and would be open to if the right opportunity pops up." Basically "we don't have any plans to, but could if something amazing comes our way."

That's not a ringing endorsement of "we need 16!"

I mean it's a fun thread and all, so definitely keep suggesting fantasy realignment, but anyone saying "they're going to take this school!" as some sort of fact is just messing with you.

edit: to be clear, I'm saying the original article/tweet was click-bait, not someone posting about it here.

For a 2-3 bid league? This seems insane to me.

Bottom line: The pond of worthy new A-10 members has been completely fished out. Maybe that changes in the next 3-5 years or maybe it doesn't.

Not that the league would do such a thing, but the A-10 slimming down to 14 members by sending La Salle to the MAAC would probably make the most sense for all three parties.

Detroit, Cleveland State, and Siena have been thrown around in the past. Not just the institutional fit thing, but also the area with respect to the sport and recruitment.

If A10 lacrosse becomes a thing, I suspect it’s there where the likes of any of these schools could see membership, even if via affiliation. Sort of like a taste or appetizer.

^^ Lacrosse affiliate members would likely be a thing for sure.

Yeah exactly. Also La Salle won't be kicked out, the most likely candidate for leaving is honestly UMass should football drive us that way

The point here isn't that the A-10 is going to 16, the point is that if someone else establishes themselves as a consistent top 40 basketball program from outside the P6 in basketball, the A-10 is going to be proactive.

Right now no one fits that criteria.

I'm not reporting anything here...just an educated guess...but if they go to 16 and can't get Temple, i'd watch for Northeastern, Boston, and CofC.

The A-10 is a terrible conference to join.

1) It will not make the cut for a P5 or FBS super division. At least with the BE the basketball is good enough they could entice members to join it for FB.

2) Revenue split is heavily tilted to those who earn NCAA units. 75 percent goes to the the program earning the unit, the other 25% is then from there split 15 ways. Due to this split most of the programs would make more money in a 1 bid conference.

Loyola and SLU would be smarter bringing their basketball to the MAC where they'd have a better chance of winning and a better strategic positioning. Bigger share of the pie if they don't win.

Tell me again about that school that jumped from the MAC to the Big East?

Because that's where Saint Louis is trying to get ...

A-10 is a better basketball league and better fit for both the Billikens and the Ramblers.

The MAC should focus on Illinois State and some other like-minded public, football-playing institutions if it wants to add members.

Butler was originally in the MAC and moved eventually to the Big East.

Cincinnati and UCF went from MAC to XII, even better.

SLU/Loyola would contend for the autobid every year in the MAC, not the case in the A10.

Butler and Cincinnati left the MAC when Harry Truman was president.

Not sure how much their long-abandoned memberships in "The Cradle of Coaches" helped either school get where it is today.

UCF went 0-11 under George O'Leary in 2004, its third and final season in the MAC before leaving for C-USA

So the MAC does have that going for itself.
