There have been some rivalries like BC-Holy Cross that were competitive up to a point where one school began emphasizing the sport and the other taking a step back.

It feels like ever since joining the Big Ten, whatever Nebraska was against Big Ten teams before joining is catching up some. Nebraska-Minnesota shapes up more interestingly these days. That one went through some extreme runs in both directions.

Surprised/not surprised that Wisconsin is up on Nebraska 11-4? That one was 3-2 Nebraska over Wisconsin before joining the conference.

I almost brought that up myself. I am sure there are a lot of Big Ten teams that have done well against Nebraska the last 7 years after being dominated by Nebraska before the Huskers joined the Big Ten.

A casual observer that is kinda about what I expected. Don James was a really good coach. During his tenure it would would not surprise me if UW had about as many Rose Bowls as USC and UCLA, without looking it up. James was an Ohio guy if memory serves correct.

That he was. Played QB at Miami and served in the US Army. He was cut from a different cloth. Not many coaches in football like him anymore.

RE: Rivalries that completely flipped around
OSU-Michigan is a good example. Historically, it's honestly been a pretty even series, outside of say, 1897-1930. Michigan was one of the first two truly elite programs outside of New England, and was competing for national titles when Ohio State was barely a college, let alone a football team. But since Tress, yeah, the differences have been massive. Michigan made a few lousy hires in a row, Ohio State hired two hall of famers, and could very well have a third coaching there now (and if he left for the NFL, well, they'd just hire Luke Fickell again and probably keep winning.

Outside of UO/Washington and Cincinnati/Miami...check out SMU/TCU. Ponies absolutely owned this series in the 1970s and 1980s....TCU has mostly dominated it since.

Spot on. UW made 6 Rose Bowl appearances in his 18 seasons in Seattle, versus 7 for USC and 4 for UCLA (10 for Michigan, 3 for OSU, and 3 for Iowa in that span as well). Also won Kent State's only MAC title to-date.

Maybe it’s a low standard, but I believe that the bare minimum required investment in UVa football results from their record against Duke.

Duke led the series 22-8 prior to 1983 (UVa was truly pathetic in football in the 1960s and 1970s).

Virginia has been 29-10 since George Welsh got rolling in 1983.

UVa leads overall 37-32, but the records across decades are one-sided.

Texas-TCU hasn't "flipped around," but it has had long periods of one-sided towards UT and then long periods relatively even.
Texas won the first 12
The next 41 were 21-19-1 Texas
Texas then won 24 in a row
Since 1992, TCU has won 8 of 15.

RE: Rivalries that completely flipped around
Don't know where I would go to find the numbers for this stuff, but I can think of two SEC rivalries that completely flipped around. I remember when Alabama used to dominate Tennessee during the '80s, but Tennessee can back to dominate the not so good Alabama coaches after Gene Stallings but before Nick Saban. As soon as Saban was hired, he made beating Tennessee a priority, IMO.

Another SEC rivalry series that has flipped would be Georgia-Florida. Georgia used to dominate Florida until Steve Spurrier came along. He made sure to dominate the Dawgs. Ray Goff, as nice as he was to the players, stunk vs Spurrier. Jim Donnan wasn't much better, IMO, although he did try. Mark Richt was hired for one purpose: to beat Florida. UGA didn't even try to hide that's why they hired him. Richt was the one coach who finally got the Dawgs over the hump to where they could finally beat Florida. Although it was thought that having the game in Jacksonville all the time only favored the Gators, I believe that some wise south Georgia Dawg fans pointed out Florida's real advantage: a bye week right before the Georgia game. Smart, a former UGA player under CMR made sure to continue the dominance vs UF and keep a bye week before the game vs the Gators also, having UGA's president back him up too!!

RE: Rivalries that completely flipped around
Rice-Texas used to be a rivalry (a long time ago). It certainly isn't now.

But after an early Texas stretch of domination (9 wins in the 1st 10 games starting in 1914, and 14 wins in the 1st 16 games), the rivalry was pretty even from 1930 to 1962 (Rice actually led the series in that stretch 17-15). And then President Kennedy had to mess things up by asking Why Does Rice Play Texas (in his famous going to the moon speech at Rice Stadium)? A month and a half after the speech, the two teams tied. But since then, Texas has won 45 times and Rice just twice.

Cincinnati-Xavier:

It's been an annual rivalry from 1946. From 1948-58, they played twice a year.

12-10 Cincinnati from 1928-1957
33-8 Cincinnati from 1958-1996
18-8 Xavier from 1996-today

The two schools also played annually in football from 1946-1973 (when Xavier dropped their team). All of the football games were played in UC's Nippert Stadium.

Washington St/Idaho another fun early one. Idaho led series 8-7-1 at first. Washington St now leads series 72-16-3. Played every year from 1901 into the 80's. Resumed in the 2000's, went dormant again, next match-up this year.

Idaho's other long time rivalry that has resumed is historically one sided. The Vandals lead Montana 50-30-2 all time. However, in the last 11 games the Grizzles are 11-2 with a current win streak of 7.

Miami played Dayton almost every year when UD football was DI (only missed one season from 1935 through 1976 outside of WWII). The overall series was 29-10-2 Miami, though from 1960 onward it was 14-1-1 (over that stretch the Flyers averaged just 7.4 points per game and were shut out six times).

Another unfortunate turn for Miami is our rivalry against Ohio U, which mirrors our failures against UC. Is still 54-41-2 in our favor, but 3-12 since 2006 (Frank Solich's second season).

It has against Utah at least. Was 30-24-3 CU before they met in 2011 (first matchup since 1962), but has been 2-9 for the Buffs so the series is now 33-32-3 Utes.

RE: Rivalries that completely flipped around
Here are some others: Oklahoma State/Tulsa. 43-27-5 OSU overall; 11-19-4 through 1952, 32-8-1 since. The Cowboys' move from the MVC to Big Eight in 1956 is the most obvious shift, though I imagine the evolution of Oklahoma State as a large public university in the post-WWII era (while Tulsa remained a very small Presbyterian college) is a factor as well.

Miami/Xavier (not a great example, but wanted to note): 18-10-3 overall; 9-9-1 during a middle section between 1949 and 1967, 9-1-2 otherwise (first met in 1902; didn't become an annual series until 1946, continued each season through 1972 a year before X discontinued the program).

(04-30-2022 12:08 PM)Love and Honor Wrote:  Noticed when writing my Kansas/Jim Harbaugh thread how big the Jayhawks' lead in the Kansas State series was until Bill Snyder turned things around. Got me thinking of notable college football rivalries that at one point were competitive or even one-sided, then turned completely towards the losing program and has basically continued ever since. Any other examples?

KU/K-State: 64-50-5 KU overall; 60-25-5 through 1992 (Snyder's fourth season), 4-25 since. Clearly correlated with Snyder, and KU's ineptitude outside of a few Mangino seasons.
Michigan/Ohio State: 59-51-6; 56-34-6 through 2000 (after Jim Tressel took over), 3-17 since. Has been discussed ad nauseum on other threads and by pundits over time, though with Ryan Day entering year four I'm curious if he keeps OSU at such a high level now that all remnants of Urban Meyer are almost gone.
Miami/Cincinnati (ugh): 59-59-7 overall; 59-44-7 through 2005 (last season before Brian Kelly started at UC), 0-15 since. Turned around based on a combination of UC moving to the Big East, investing in the program, and having a few home run coaching hires, plus Miami admin mismanagement and some bad hires.
Idaho/Boise State: 17-22-1 overall; 17-10-1 through 1998 (three seasons after they both moved up to DI-A), 0-12 since. Clear correlation with their moves up, when BSU started kicking butt and UI fell from being a consistent DI-AA contender to FBS doormat. The series will presumably stay dormant from here.
The rivalry flipped the other way in basketball starting in the 80s - after a KSU sweep in 1983 to bring it to KU 118, KSU 82, KU has since gone 85-12.
