Rice Rugby Coach Killed in Car Crash
Horrible news...on Friday, Rice's club rugby coach, Pedrie Wannenburg, was killed when his car was hit by a car fleeing the scene of an accident in a high-speed chase. His son is in critical condition. News story and GoFundMe link are below.

He had 20 caps for South Africa's national team and over 200 matches played for pro teams in South Africa, Ireland and France.

RE: Rice Rugby Coach Killed in Car Crash
The boys are hosting an impromptu rugby 7's tournament out at the pitch Saturday (4/30) from 2-4pm which many of the collegiate sides across the state will attend. They will honor the family at 2. I imagine it will be quite the postgame celebration. From the rugby alum list:

Rice Rugby Football Club would like to welcome all to the Pedrie Wannenburg Memorial Spring Sevens Tournament. This tournament is dedicated to the memory of our Head Coach, Pedrie Wannenburg.

The games will be held this Saturday, 4/30, between 2-4 PM on IM Field 4 (behind the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center) where rugby teams will be coming together from all over the state to remember Pedrie’s dedication to the sport.

Before the rugby begins, we will hold a minute's silence and a prayer for Pedrie and his family at 2pm.

We are asking players to make a donation and to RSVP to Xander Abbott at ada5@rice.edu. You do not need a full team to enter.

At the tournament there will be merchandise sold with all proceeds going to support the Wannenburg family. All are welcome to enjoy a beautiful afternoon of rugby. There will also be a post-tournament social on the field.

RIP Pedrie

High speed chase going over 100 mph by a 16 year old. I believe 2 of his friends were in the car too. Because of his age, his name is not being released.

Nothing will change unless parents are held accountable in some way for the actions of their children. We need better parenting and better school systems. I believe children should be required to stay in school through high school too (although I don't have any way of knowing whether this 16 year old was a drop out or not).

We also need to evaluate once again whether high speed chases by officers are the solution. Perhaps we should just monitor where the car is going, and make the arrest later.

The accident happened less than a minute after the cop tried to pull them over. The kid took off when the cop got out of his car and wrecked a couple of blocks later. There was no “chase”, clickbait headline notwithstanding. Please don’t deflect blame to the cop, the jack@ss behind the wheel made his choices.

And that jack@$$ needs to get convicted of murder and get the maximum penalty thrown at him.

Well, he is a kid who did something stupid... but it was stupid and not the cop’s fault.
