Winthrop Hires A Consultant To Review Their Athletics

They were looking to add football in the past? But could this be looking again to start a program since Campbell seems to be looked at as a football affiliate to the CAA.

A partially completed, taxpayer supported football facility is now available in Winthrop’s backyard.

It's not uncommon for schools to bring in outside consultants to assess their financial well-being, their branding, their staffing levels, marketing strategy, etc. That's what this...much more about operational excellence than sport sponsorship changes.

Some outside consultants have a reputation as creating studies that validate the direction the school is taking in the first place.

Are they potentially trying to get into the SoCon?

I'd like that. It seems they've really outgrown the Big South now. I thought that 5 yrs ago.

You have to have football before going to SoCon to get in.

How do you explain North Carolina-Greensboro. They have been a member since 1997 without football.

The SoCon has a great setup with their 10/9 membership. They also like their 4/4/2 public/private/military arrangement. Don’t see them expanding.

That is all any consultant does from McKinsey or Bain on down. They’re hired to justify what management has already decided to do as CYA. Management can’t be blamed when Boston Consulting Group endorsed their plan.

Winthrop has been on some CAA fans' wishlist for a bit now. I don't know that they are so attractive at the moment with how large the CAA has gotten, but perhaps that could be a move that makes sense sometime down the line.
