Villanova men’s basketball coach Jay Wright is retiring, according to multiple reports. The Athletic’s Shams Charania was the first to report that retirement was likely.

Wright, 60, had wrestled with the decision privately throughout the offseason, sources with knowledge of the situation tell Sports Illustrated. Eventually, the Hall of Fame coach elected to move on, a decision that will reverberate around a sport already experiencing plenty of coaching turnover.

Could be a big blow to the Big East. Depends on exactly how much Villanova regresses without him and if another program or two can take it up to another level from good to great (cough UConn cough cough).

I mean the nerve of him. Doesn't he know he's supposed to announce it before his last season so he can have the networks pay homage to him all season long?

Really surprised by this. Wright is at his peak and always seems hungry for more and super energetic.

Sounds like former Assistant Kyle Neptune coming back to Nova to coach. He got Fordham to .500 this year for first time since 2016.

Jay seems like he would be pretty good on TV. Wonder if he’ll go that route.

Big blow to Nova and the Big East. Wonder how this impacts TV contract negotiations.

Yeah, there was speculation he was going to hang around to potentially catch up to Coach K, but that always seemed far fetched given the distance and age.

He was definitely making more appearances on tv and radio this time. I buy it that he’d be heading to one of those jobs. He seems pretty good for it. Maybe he was testing the waters.

Still, like Coach K, I have to wonder why this is happening this season, just as NIL is taking strong and firm rooting in college athletics. Coupled with the fickleness of the portal, I can see the guys getting burned out by it all. That on one hand, these guys not maybe pulling the respect they should with recruits and players is one thing, and that might be taking one of their aces away from up their sleeves, taking that control factor away from such guys. But, on the other hand, I think with these two new factors in major college athletics, the job to recruit amd retain a team from being yearly contractors, and having to maybe wise up to the NIL stuff, which is just not really a thing with the pros, is problematic for the role in general at the collegiate level. You can never be “off” at this level. Recruiting is a 24/7/365 thing it seems, with coaching on top.

I don’t like where college sports are heading.

Good points on burn out. What does Wright have to prove at this point?

I see him bolting for the NBA in the next couple of years.

No doubt that coaching at power programs is changing rapidly. Regardless, these coaches are getting paid incredible amounts.

He has plenty of money. He probably just wants to enjoy life with his family while he is still relatively young.
