Wrestling isn’t huge in college in the deep South. Chattanooga is the southernmost D1 program. A few smaller schools here and there have programs. One D3 in Alabama has a team and is starting one for women.

High school wrestling is big in Alabama. If SEC schools started a team, they’d find wrestlers looking for warm winters. Just don’t see it happening.

Arkansas HS sanctioned wrestling in 2008. Little Rock, a Pac 12 affiliate, has been sponsoring it for three years.

How about women's football while we're at it?

If college enrollment among men continues to decline, women's football may be the answer. From a facilities standpoint it would make sense to have them play in the spring.

I wish more in the SEC would sponsor wrestling. I get Title IX issues but you could start beach volleyball, which costs very little and you can double count scholarships for women. You could also start a women’s wrestling team. Not sure if “gender equity” is achieved when you launch a sport for both sexes.
Wrestling is an emerging sport for women.

Iowa cut two men's sports and two women's sport and were sued based on Title IX. They reinstated the women's sports and added women's wrestling.

Wrestling is a big deal at Iowa, which has 24 national titles.
