SBC Basketball 2022
We've talked a lot about SBC Football, but what are your all's expectations for SBC Basketball and do you think Marshall basketball will do better in the SBC?

I think we will be competitive. I'll wait until next year begins to tell you just how well we do in conference.

RE: SBC Basketball 2022
My fear is that we do well enough in a watered down conference (top to bottom) to let Dan keep the helm without any real improvement. Kind of how Doc started winning once CUSA football got watered down, but he wasn't really any better, before or after Cato. Dan has that same problem after Elmore. He's neglected to get a couple top players at key positions. Maybe this guard works out, maybe not, but he's stepping up in overall competition, too. And VMI was improved as a team, but still pretty bad overall. Not sure this was the game changer we're looking for. I don't think it hurts us, but stealing a major PG and a serviceable big would have gotten us closer to our goal.

You make good points. I'm hoping this past season lit a fire under Dan's arse.

RE: SBC Basketball 2022
It doesn't look the fire was more than a little spark. he needed to add a PG and bruising PF that's a good defender. I wonder if the AD is going to remind him of his quote after their meeting in March about hoping to bring in three portal players. Looks like he forgets what he says in his press conferences especially about playing zone when his man to man 'd' is being scored on at will. Goran should not see any playing time since he can't guard a grandparent or even out rebound them. He's been on the team three years and he doesn't know what 'd' is so why would anyone expect him to become a player now. He's on the team to keep the GPA up for the team.

Oh, I'm positive. Positive we didn't do enough. But there's positive and then there's irrational. Some of dem fanbois are irrationally optimistic. I don't see how we added through subtraction. We lost Beyers and George, 2 strong veteran bench players and occasional starters, and gained the VMI dude and Handlotion (not a typo, I'm not saying Handlogton.) The other players would have to make tremendous leaps in ability and Dan doesn't instill enough discipline to get these guy to workout on their own in the offseason. It just doesn't add up, even with the perceived lesser conference. If we're better at all it won't be CUSA better, it will be SBC better.

RE: SBC Basketball 2022
The worst is about to happen, IMHO. We are a bad basketball team with bad attitudes and lazy work ethics. However, we will probably fare pretty well in the SBC and finish with a respectable record and a significant improvement from last year and then Hillbilly Dan will be retained for more substandard seasons.

That being said, my source told me that his sister said that he was going to coach for another year or two and then retire...that was three years ago. I think he will be done after next year...one way or the other. It is time for new blood. young and vibrant blood. Someone with fire in their belly.

The problem with DD is he just likes some parts of being a HC. He doesn't like recruiting and at his intro press conference he made it clear.
When he said the Herd bball program would not be able to recruit good talent but would have to sign players and mold them into his system; players that loved the game and wanted to improve each year.

It's funny because every coach before could sign quality as GW got Tamar, J.R., travis Young and etc. and DJ vgot Shaq Johnson, Whiteside, Pena, Pitts and etc. and Herrion signed two juco AA in Dennis Tinnon and Robert Goff, but Herrion couldn't control the team. Remember Pittman was a very highly recruited player but was a head case.

DD wanted to take it easy and not be on the road recruiting and he started making an excuse for lazy recruiting right off the tip. He should at least do one year of hard recruiting to make up for his missed trips. He's still got the rest of spring and summer so cut the goons on the bench and bring in some players; MU doesn't need a peace corps team.
GO HERD!!!

we gained FR Conner as well as FR Handlogten and JR Curfman.
but i agree, that it's very reasonable to assume that Conner and Handlogten will likely not replace what we had in Beyers and George, at least, not immediately or not this year.
Conner looks like he likes to stay involved/moving, like OAK.
i hope that Toussaint and McKey will be a little better and we'll see if Fricks contributes.
i think Curfman's numbers (from VMI) won't fall off much if at all- by all appearances, and by what has been floated, he is a very confident young man, a leader- we'll see if that's true.
we know what we have in Kinsey- and Taylor's work ethic is team tops.
not sure about Early, Braun, Sarenac and Miladinovic as far as playing time but i expect their time will have drop off some, unless there are surprises.

we know it's been said that some players will switch or switch back to positions they primarily played at prior to last season. that could help.

so it's true there will be very few changes overall and it could very well be Danny's last year. but, i hope not because i simply don't want failure any year. there's always a chance that he'll totally turn it around and maybe anything less would be total failure. i always think of the saying that you can't do the same thing and expect different results and Danny is very close to doing just that.

I hope DD sticks to his plan as he said Goran would be 3rd string with the young guys(Toussaint, McKey and etc.) will be getting most of the playing time. I thought they should have seen more action last season but every time he said so and so played great he would leave them on the bench for five or six games.
Anyway I'm holding out hope that DD sticks to his word and the guys have a great season and get to the tourney.

RE: SBC Basketball 2022
I think the biggest thing he could do that would not require anything different is to evaluate and put together a game roster BEFORE the season starts. We should not still be looking for the right combination more than halfway through the season. And substitute with purpose rather than like a mad chemist trying to see what'll happen. Don't try this guy here. Put in the second best three to spell the best three. Or go big or small, but already know what that means and not play with it in a game. That's what practice is for.

This is why I don't like the distraction of fans at the practices. Open it once a week for fans or something, but the other days work on lineups and making hard choices without distraction.

13 players. There shouldn't be a 3rd string. If someone is relegated to 3rd string then they don't need to be here. Someone who can and will fight for 1st string should take their place.

RE: SBC Basketball 2022
I expect our record to improve a bit next year, though I don't think the team will actually be any better. We needed some major changes to take place, to both the roster AND the coaching staff, and unfortunately neither one happened. Our schedule is a bit softer so I expect a few more wins, but I don't really see any improvement overall. We should have either 1) not renewed Dan and brought in someone else or 2) made a serious roster makeover be a condition of keeping Dan. I hope the VMI transfer helps, but I think many are fooling themselves into thinking that adding that one player is going to really turn around our basketball fortunes. I think the VMI transfer is solid, but it's not like we are adding MJ or something like that.

I just feel like with Dan we now have Doc 2.0. Doc got WAY too much rope because he was buddy buddy with the AD, and Dan is similar as to the ties he and his family has to Marshall. Doc lived for years off the success of the Cato years, just like Dan is living off the success of the Elmore years. But in both cases once that magical run ended, both showed they weren't nearly as good of a coach as those few years made folks think they were. We waited way too long to get rid of Doc, and I believe the same is true of Dan now.
