Unfortunately WHSV, in all its suckiness, has not had a bit of coverage during the 5:00 news and not looking promising for the 5:30 broadcast. They truly are a horrible station for local news.......

EDIT: There was a 20 second mention of the win and a graphic showing the score during the 6:00 broadcast. No game footage.....no coach interview....nothing else.

I have emailed WHSV about their terrible coverage of JMU sports in general and specifically about women's sports and especially WBB. Didn't get a reply, of course, but wasn't expecting any. However, perhaps email bombing their sports editor might help. We all should get after them!

On the subject of the Fab Five, I love their go-getter attitude. All of them. I loved the way the regulars were cheering them on. I love the way they play together. I kind of guess they are the practice squad and that's why they are such a unit. Hope to see more of that next year.

I can't help but think that WHSV (and most of Harrisonburg, to be honest) considers JMU to be a barely-tolerated neighbor of an Agricultural Hub rather than the primary economic force in the city and county. (or both, perhaps - barely tolerated because of the economic dominance)

JMU isn't the only school with this problem.
I work in Blacksburg and there are plenty of people that don't have nice things to say about VT and their impact on the town. VT brings a ton of revenue and jobs to Blacksburg, but some would prefer VT to not exist and let them live peacefully in their cozy little town. There is a TON of agriculture in this area, not to mention the college actually contributing to that agriculture (both academically and in the field).
I would say there are probably more colleges than not where the "townies" are not happy to have a college/university in their town... no matter the economic impact. A lot of them refuse to see the benefit and would rather yell about the problems.
It's human nature after all.

One of my former students worked for WHSV. It is one of the smallest markets that has an affiliate and is run on a shoestring budget. I wouldn't read too much into it other than they have constant turnover and the budget severely limits their ability to send reporters out of the viewing area.

I've noticed the Roanoke affiliates covering JMU more than they used to, I doubt WHSV changes their coverage unless something significant changes.

i was going to make a budgets comment. Frankly I'm shocked that the DNR had somebody in Pensacola. That's probably Mettlen's first trip anywhere since he was hired.

I'm almost positive he went to Norfolk and Chapel Hill as well as a few of the road football games.

He probably has... but I recall more times than not that the DNR hasn't sent their sports reporters much of anywhere since the pandemic

RE: WBB vs. TXST, SBC Final TODAY March 6, 2 PM ESPNU ESPN+
I had no expectations that WHSV would have sent someone to cover the tournaments - although with both of them at the same place at the same time they could have gotten double bang for their buck - but surely they could have done an actual story on the game with highlights from ESPN and/or a phone call with a coach or player or even Corey Spector who covered the game for JMU Sports. Instead they take their news clips from other stations or Staunton or Waynesboro or cover pet allergies.

Hopefully someone will be there tonight for the welcome home ceremony.

The sports director at WHSV has been “away” since October. I’ve inquired before and received a prompt response. The official word is that he was still with the station, but was away taking time to care for personal reasons. No on-air explanation for his absence has ever been given.

When the old sports director was presemt WHSV did a solid job covering the Dukes. Since his absence not so much.

I think we are pretty locked into a 13 seed.

While a LOOONNGGG shot, if JMU pulls a couple upsets and makes it to the Sweet 16 a JMU - Tech matchup would certainly be possible.
