Howard to CAA in 23-24?
HBCU GameDay says that Howard is likely to move to the CAA starting in the 23-24 school year. They would still be in the MEAC in 2022-23.

How many teams does the CAA have now? Two dozen?

I wonder if Howard would actually end up leaving FB in the MEAC. That would seem to work out for everyone.

Right, but that part could be conjecture. The CAA and MEAC would both be better off if Howard FB stayed in the MEAC. It would keep the CAA at 14 FB members and allow the MEAC to continue meeting the bare minimum for a multisport conference. It's not like their FB program is a big prize.

I don't want this!

The perfect size for CAA is 12. We didn't need Hampton and one of Monmouth/NC A&T.

If Howard leaves the MEAC, the conference does not have enough schools to retain an autobid with five members.

This is true, of course, but the MEAC doesn't accept autobids in FB anyway. The more problematic bit is not having enough fully sponsored men's team sports to meet NCAA regs for a multisport conference.

I’d disagree there. As far as FCS programs go, Howard is a pretty big prize from an institutional standpoint. Getting arguably the most prestigious HBCU to leave an HBCU-dominated league is pretty huge. I would certainly think that the CAA would want Howard for all-sports.

They'd be getting everything except football. Howard FB has performed poorly, is all I'm saying, so it would likely be a competitive drag.

RE: Howard to CAA in 23-24?
The CAA is going all in on HBCU. The budget metrics say these schools will be at the very bottom of the CAA in basketball and football resources. Howard is CAA AI, Hampton you can argue is reasonably close, but NC A&T is not close. Clearly this is strategic, and it may not have much to do with athletics.

I do wonder about football, as they really don't need the CAAF schools who are not full members.

And I don't think Chicago State football is happening, considering our AD who was the brainchild behind dropping baseball and adding football just quit this week.

Also, huge props to HBCU Gameday, who's now broke:
1) FAMU/BCU to SWAC
2) NC A&T to CAA
3) Howard to CAA

IIRC, some CAA fan on here said HBCU Gameday was just looking for clicks. In reality, HBCU Gameday has an established track record second to few.

So if Howard does join for FB to make it 15, the teams can be arranged in 5 pods of 3 for scheduling purposes. You play your 2 podmates every year and alternate between half the other 12 opponents for 8 games total.

Maine/New Hampshire/Rhode Island
Albany/Monmouth/Stony Brook
Delaware/Towson/Villanova
Hampton/Howard/NC A&T
Elon/Richmond/William & Mary

Well, I don't think anyone really thought it was happening in the first place.

RE: Howard to CAA in 23-24?
CAA Football has to be reaching an impasse soon. 15 teams is obscenely high, no FBS or FCS conference has that.

It could be easier to just trim the fat and dump most of the non-football. Goodbye to America East schools, fend for yourself! Maine, Albany and New Hampshire.

Rhode Island hasn't contributed much of anything footballwise, but they have a sexy A10 brand name. Same with Richmond, who won a FCS title in the 2000s. Villanova, you obviously keep for the sexy name and Big East ties. But the America East schools can go, you're also reducing travel by getting rid of the most northern geographic outliers.

With Hampton and A&T firmly in the CAA, Howard can now join the league as the 14th member of the CAA while preserving some HBCU rivalries.

It makes sense for all parties

Sucks for those left behind in the MEAC. I would surmise rule changes are coming to allow that conference to continue without football.

???

When OU and Texas join the SEC, they will have 16 football members.

When Notre Dame contracted for 5/8 of its football schedule, the ACC has played with 14.625 teams.

You may not like the addition, but there is nothing obscene about 15 football teams. The real questions are whether all these changes are addressing the core CAA members (W&M and Delaware) interests, and is the CAA able to get better payouts.
