Russia beat and threatens dual Ukrainian/British citizen.

The picture I saw was of a man, maybe smacked around, but far from beaten. What I dont understand is why people are shocked or even surprised that someone who was shooting at you and trying to kill you just a few minutes or hours earlier is then smacked or even beaten when they are captured....

human nature comes into play and its not a sporting even that once the whistle blows you turn those emotions off

Agreed, war is not some game, it is for keeps and the emotions that go into that are off the chart.

Isn’t about half of Russia’s force “rent a soldier” from territory outside of Russia proper?

It certainly happens on all sides. But Russian officials, not just the grunts, were apparently involved. This was also a negotiated surrender, apparently discussed for a couple days. The Russian officials are threatening not to treat him as a POW. And this is a well known British citizen, so you would think they would be a little more careful.
They allowed pictures of him handcuffed without the beating and then show him afterwards.

I don't think much of their Donbas mercenary army is actually from the Ukraine. Its probably mostly Russian. But they supposedly have brought in Syrians and Libyans to fight for Russia as well.

Showing him on Russian TV is also a clear violation of the Geneva convention. Its something you would expect from the North Vietnamese military or the Iranians or terrorist groups.

And I will say there appear to be very few POWs in this war. I suspect both sides are frequently not taking prisoners.

Russia took 100,000 prisoners at Stalingrad. Only 5,000 made it back to Germany. And that wasn't until 1955, 10 years after the war was over and 12 years after their surrender. The Eastern front of WWII was very brutal. The Western allies and Germans treated each other much better.
