When I lived at the dorms in the mid-eighties, the food was very institutional like. To me, it was edible but I'll eat anything. Typical dinner was Encore-grade Salisbury steak with brown liquid on top, watery mashed potatoes and canned mixed vegetables. Did it do the job for me? Yeah, but I didn't expect Chez Paul to begin with so it didn't bother me, but I know during dinner time the Douglas lobby was packed waiting for pizza deliveries because people didn't like what they were serving that night.

The Plaza was like heaven after a year of NIU dorm food.

From what I heard, there were disputes between the food company that contracted with NIU to run the cafeterias at the dorms and NIU administration because the food company was not living up to the standards that were spelled out in the contract. But they didn't change companies and the food stayed at the same quality. They must have given a discount to NIU to stop their complaining.

Brutal. Dorm food wasn't that bad when I went. It was certainly better than hospital food. What were the weapons of choice for pizza back then? Pizza pros was our favorite. That is until I discovered Pizza Villa down the road.

The main pizza places when I went was Domino's, Little Caesars, Pizza World, Pizza Villa St. Peppers, J.P. Hannigans and Sam's. And I forgot Paglai's.

Out of all of them Sam's was the best. I think they had a day where it was cheap to order a pizza. Sam's didn't cater much to the students, they were happy with the Townfolk business. Sam's tasted like the pizza you would get in the Chicagoland area.

Domino's, LC & PW were cardboard pizzas, but the most ordered because they were cheap and had quantity(doubles). Cheap and quantity always overruled taste.
Peppers and Hannigans pizza was decent but expensive. The rich kids would order from them. Pizza Villa was between Dominos and Peppers for price and taste.

I never went to Paglai's until my last semester senior year even though they had all you can eat Pizza on Tuesday's for 5 bucks. They also had BYOB. So 4 of us would go when it opened at 4, bring a couple of cases of Schaefer at 5.99/case and play spades in a booth until it closed. They kept the cases in their frig and as we played and if we got hungry, we just order a pizza.
They never had a problem with us doing that.

Aahh, memories! I enjoyed Pagliai's but have a not so great memory. I choked on a piece of cheese from the pizza. Part of it was in my stomach and the other part still in my mouth. So....it was not too hard to just yank out. That, gentlemen, is your mind candy mental image for the day!! That certainly impressed my girlfriend! Luckily, she still became my wife.

My pizza place of choice was of course Pizza Villa. A couple of us guys ordered a pizza on the first night I was in the dorm (Douglas). It's still our favorite.

I would have liked to see the waitress' reaction as she was walking by and noticing you pulling out a long cheese string from your throat

At that time Pagiai's was on 1st Street by where Walgreen's is now. That was very close to the Grotto. So, people in the area were very used to seeing me pull things from my body.

Paglia's AYCE was a scam in my book lol.

Only went their twice. BYOB. I ran the #. I think it was 5 of us. 2 gigantic pizza's with extra toppings was like $20-22 bucks. We got that and still brought pizza home! And there were some eaters.

But of note, Paglia's was not just an NIU thing. They were all over midwest at college towns.

I went to one about 3 years ago in Charleston during state track meet at EIU. They had an old map of where they were. Pizza was great. I think they even had the red plastic cups!

To the dorm food comments, I agree. Wasn't the best food, but was not awful, other than breakfast.

I just thought it funny that those who complained the most about dorm food, when we lived in apt,. could not cook a thing!

Order out, say how great your Ragu and pasta was. Spaghettio's, Hot dogs, Ramen noodles. Or pizza, fast food....cold cut combo from Subway 3 times a week lol.

I would make full blown meals all the time, eat for 2 days with my roommate. Chicken cacciatore, pepper steak, beef stroganoff, homemade spaghetti sauce, chicken soup, etc. Cracked me up how people ate post dorms.

I just have one question for you. Did you wear an apron when you made the full blown meals?

YES! They continued to do that in the fall of 2006, when I lived in the dorms. It wasn't bad. Great dinner for a meal away from home.

In your list of Spaghettio's Ramen Noodles etc., You forgot Mac-n-Cheese and tuna fish. But my all time favorite "easy to make" food were the 20 pack of Glenmark frozen beef patties that were $2.50/box at the Pick-n-Save.

It cracked me up that you would get these huge frozen patties, throw them in a fry pan and heat on the stove. In a minute, you had a cooked pattie that was the size of a quarter and a puddle of grease.

So, you had your own version of a White Castle slider.

Glenmark patties are still sold today and are not bad at all. Cost is much higher, though.

Bring back fond memories, Schaefer? They are still only about $1.25 per burger!

I wonder how remote lesrning/Covid has reduced enrollment. It you can't partake in normal college activities, maybe save money and complete your associate's at CC

It cracked me up that you would get these huge frozen patties, throw them in a fry pan and heat on the stove. In a minute, you had a cooked pattie that was the size of a quarter and a puddle of grease.

Glenmark? Pick N Save? Where was there a Pick N Save?

Over on Sycamore Road, across from where the Target is now. The building was torn down when the old Woolco/WalMart building was redeveloped.

In your list of Spaghettio's Ramen Noodles etc., You forgot Mac-n-Cheese and tuna fish. But my all time favorite "easy to make" food were the 20 pack of Glenmark frozen beef patties that were $2.50/box at the Pick-n-Save.

Bring back fond memories, Schaefer? They are still only about $1.25 per burger!

Those look like the box burgers from Aldi. We had a small rectangle propane grill. Would be an inferno in 3 minutes.

If you made those or the beloved mac n cheese/tuna (which I do a few time a year with onions) it would have been considered a combination of delicacy and equivalent of a 5 course meal for some I lived with!03-lmfao

There they are, teasing you that you will be eating a huge hamburger where the meat will be bigger than the bun. Then in a matter of 1 minute and some heat- instant micro-burgets!

So, you had your own version of a White Castle slider.
Do you remember the scene from Back to the future 2 where Lea Thompson puts a 1 inch pizza in the hydrator, presses a button and you have an 18" pizza? It was the exact opposite with the Glenmark beef patties.
