Undergraduate Student Declines
An interesting article about states that provide free college but also had an interesting factoid below.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/08/free-col...tates.html

Quote:The number of undergraduates in college is now down 5.1% compared to two years ago — a loss of nearly 1 million students, according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center — with the schools serving low- and middle-income students seeing the largest declines.

I didn't really see anything in the article that mentions it, but I would like to know how many kids in the US are between the ages of 18-22 now and 10 years ago. I am sure that age group is smaller now. You don't see to many families with more than 3 kids anymore. When I grew up, my family had 5 kids and we were the smallest family in the neighborhood.
I also bet a lot of college eligible kids decided to take the armed forces way of life than the educational way of life which would also factor in the decline of college enrollment.

I think the generation of students that were told you had to go to a four-year university and get a degree are in such huge financial debt due to student loans that they are getting married, having kids, and buying homes much later in life.

How do you have kids when you are paying $500+ a month on student loans for 10 years while also paying rent and bills with a median $50k annual salary?

Tradesmen are in high demand and make good money without having to go to school for 4 years.

A lot of today's youth would be smart to get into HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Someone has to install all those 240V electrical hookups for the huge push towards EVs.

Having more practical, career based degrees and built-in internship programs would help.

The days of Art History and English lit degrees are over.

Good point, I wonder if alot of young adults are going the JUCO way to get the core courses out of the way and then get a 2 year loan to pay for 2 years at a university. A 2 year loan is more manageable than a 4 year loan to pay off.

Or online. I've read that drinking and Greek culture in college is on a decline.

You piqued my interest and on looked for cost for credit hours at a major university if you attended on campus or online and they virtually are the same.

Do major Universities accept online core courses from University of Phoenix or Upper Central South New Jersey State( The Fighting Toxins) if you transferred?

If they are drinking less are herbal refreshments on the rise?

Maybe tuition is the same, but you could also just live at your parents house for free and avoid room & board. I hate to hate on the younger generation, but they seem like the type to be coddled and desire to stay within the safe confines of their home.

And miss out on that fantastic dorm cafeteria food? They don't know what they are missing!

When I was at NIU many years ago, the food in the NIU dorms was excellent and rated very high nationally. And the food at the Plaza was a lot better than the dorms. It was very easy to gain weight. I still think about the great Plaza food often.

Is this a joke or are you serious? In my time, the food was okay, but not great.

Dogpound deli for sub sandwiches. Not quite Subway, but pretty good

Stevenson had options. I was there post remodel, it was like a food court with tons of options.

Grant Hall had Sunday Brunch. It was like an all you can eat Denny's in there. Made to order omelets and other great dishes to make you forget the horrors if drinking the nights before. The also had random good dinners on weekdays. Like STEAK DINNER.

Everything else was just basic. Better than hospital food, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

I enjoyed the food in the dorms. The Plaza food was outstanding. For Thursday dinner (maybe it was once a month), we had an outstanding dinner, such as steak or some exotic dish, served with nice tablecloths and candles on the tables. For lunch, they often served a cheeseburger covered with a sharp cheddar cheese sauce that was to die for. I’d give $50 for one of those now! Desserts were also great. There was a guy on my floor who gained 30 pounds during the year.

When I lived at the dorms in the mid-eighties, the food was very institutional like. To me, it was edible but I'll eat anything. Typical dinner was Encore-grade Salisbury steak with brown liquid on top, watery mashed potatoes and canned mixed vegetables. Did it do the job for me? Yeah, but I didn't expect Chez Paul to begin with so it didn't bother me, but I know during dinner time the Douglas lobby was packed waiting for pizza deliveries because people didn't like what they were serving that night.

The Plaza was like heaven after a year of NIU dorm food.

From what I heard, there were disputes between the food company that contracted with NIU to run the cafeterias at the dorms and NIU administration because the food company was not living up to the standards that were spelled out in the contract. But they didn't change companies and the food stayed at the same quality. They must have given a discount to NIU to stop their complaining.

Brutal. Dorm food wasn't that bad when I went. It was certainly better than hospital food. What were the weapons of choice for pizza back then? Pizza pros was our favorite. That is until I discovered Pizza Villa down the road.

Now I did hear that the Plaza food was world class. I got to try it a few times touring the place. And can vouch for it. It was restaurant quality. Like Chili's or Fridays.

The main pizza places when I went was Domino's, Little Caesars, Pizza World, Pizza Villa St. Peppers, J.P. Hannigans and Sam's. And I forgot Paglai's.

Out of all of them Sam's was the best. I think they had a day where it was cheap to order a pizza. Sam's didn't cater much to the students, they were happy with the Townfolk business. Sam's tasted like the pizza you would get in the Chicagoland area.

Domino's, LC & PW were cardboard pizzas, but the most ordered because they were cheap and had quantity(doubles). Cheap and quantity always overruled taste.
Peppers and Hannigans pizza was decent but expensive. The rich kids would order from them. Pizza Villa was between Dominos and Peppers for price and taste.

I never went to Paglai's until my last semester senior year even though they had all you can eat Pizza on Tuesday's for 5 bucks. They also had BYOB. So 4 of us would go when it opened at 4, bring a couple of cases of Schaefer at 5.99/case and play spades in a booth until it closed. They kept the cases in their frig and as we played and if we got hungry, we just order a pizza.
They never had a problem with us doing that.

Aahh, memories! I enjoyed Pagliai's but have a not so great memory. I choked on a piece of cheese from the pizza. Part of it was in my stomach and the other part still in my mouth. So....it was not too hard to just yank out. That, gentlemen, is your mind candy mental image for the day!! That certainly impressed my girlfriend! Luckily, she still became my wife.

My pizza place of choice was of course Pizza Villa. A couple of us guys ordered a pizza on the first night I was in the dorm (Douglas). It's still our favorite.
