Would be nice if the “Kalamazoo Promise” applied only to Kalamazoo kids enrolling at Western.

GVSU has over 7000 students from these 2 counties. WMU only has 1500. I know it's in GVSUs backyard so it's difficult. GVSU is also spanking WMU in Wayne/Oakland counties. 4000-2000.

Me & other GR alumni have been saying that for years.

They won't do it.

I wrote then President Bernhard in the early 1980's regarding the same thing-WMU wasn't aggressive enough in Kent/Ottawa county. He replied with a great letter agreeing with many of my views, but noting there were big 'political' challenges. In essence GVSU has always had a tremendous vision for dominating that region of Michigan-let's face it, they've done a good job expanding. Part of the problem is WMU was known for a long time as a Kalamazoo/regional university (they still are) and when prospective west Michigan students consider options beyond GVSU that necessarily includes competition from MSU/CMU/EMU (UM is in a different category as a major Research University). Most Kent/Ottawa college students attend GVSU as commuters, the once who look beyond that are fought for by a lot of schools.

I believe the ability to commute to GVSU from Kent/Ottawa makes GVSU a top choice versus the MAC schools. Parents aren't willing to put their children into almost insurmountable debt when they can stay at home and pay half if they had gone away.

Hillsdale College has done a GREAT job and they've done it on their own dime-they don't receive any government funding of any kind. Only private donations and tuition money. When you don't have access to government money you really focus on the bottom line. Many public institutions could learn from HC on cost control, instead of jacking up tuition every year by 5-7% in knee-jerk fashion.

It's OK to have 1 conservative school in a sea of far left institutions.

"Far left". Hilarious. This isn't Berkeley in the 60's.

He's not an alum. Also, the answer to your question is that Hillsdale is run by and attracts psychos.

He's a former student, which by definition is an alum. I never asked a question although you are proof that WMU also attracts their fair share of psychos.

It's OK to have 1 conservative school in a sea of far left institutions.

They're a voice of conservatism-fiscal and social-in a veritable sea of university Wokism. And unlike 99% of the colleges and universities in this country they take not a penny from the federal or state governments, that entitles them to instruct anyway they want to. They're only accepting about 24% of their freshman applicants now, WMU should be so selective.

Western accepts 85% of their applicants, if you have a GPA in excess of 2.7 and an ACT score above 20/SAT score above 1010 you'll have no problem getting into Western. Hillsdale College requires an ACT above 29 and SAT above 1290, your application won't get considered unless your GPA is 3.90 or above and they want to see strong evidence of AP classes (they also like a record of community service and 3/4 of their student body have advanced Musical skills-vocal or instrumental). They bring in a smaller percentage of a far more select academic group. And every student has to meet their academic requirements as base entry requirements, there are no exceptions. And yet they've won conference championships this year in Volleyball, Swimming, Men's basketball, Softball and (get this) shooting sports.

The significant thing is while many public universities have shrunk dramatically in student population the last 5 years schools like Hillsdale College have seen record applications and their biggest problem is determining if they should grow the size of the school to handle increased demand. They must be doing something right, the customer is never wrong!

What is "woke" and why is it bad?

'Woke' is a term used to designate a person or entity which has embraced common social justice arguments to an unhealthy extreme. To a woke person, just about everything boils down to following an intolerant or moralizing ideology to promote social justice. Any disagreement to their views, methods and goals is labeled as 'racist' or 'intolerant', they thereby attempt to suppress any more vigorous discussion of issues by using name-calling and pejorative accusations to silence dissent.

In my view attempting to silence debate and discussion is the first resort of non-thinking people. Unfortunately a lot of folks in academia today have surrendered to the woke zeitgeist out of fear or lack of academic rigor. Hillsdale College tries to promote debate and discussion as necessary requirements for problem resolution in a Democratic society-the Socratic method if you will. A lot of folks, particularly those on the Left, can't tolerate that so HC is accused of being-naturally-'intolerant' and 'racist' among other things.

Wokism seems to have run it's course, people are tired of the name calling and attempts to silence disagreement. Even some of the more Leftist academic institutions are starting to stand-up to students 'shouting down' speakers they don't agree with. Being intolerant in the name of 'tolerance' is becoming passe, as it should.

Quote:"At its heart wokeness is divisive, exclusionary, and hateful. It basically gives mean people... a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue." Elon Musk

Hillsdale must be poorly run. Just look at their branding, as it is so out of line by having their athletic spirit mark (Charger/Horse head) running the wrong direction, indication they are moving backwards.

Maybe we can send Tony Proudfoot and company their way to help Hillsdale get on track and moving in the right direction.

Maybe you should look up the definition. You're wrong as usual.

a former pupil or student of a school, college, or university

They've found ways to differentiate themselves from other schools & who would've thought, it works.

Still, apparently the school is only 1500ish students.

That's not true. If you attend a school, you are an alum of that school.

alumnus noun

alum·nus | \ ə-ˈləm-nəs \
plural alumni\ ə-ˈləm-ˌnī \
Definition of alumnus

1 : a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university
