It is what it is, but the facts is look at my link and what was the plan when he got the extension for the duration of current contract, which meant he would be finalizing negotiations. This announcement means someone else will die negotiating that deal. Whether this is good or bad news remains to be seen.

That article is from 2017… and is proof that there is this thing called change that can you know… change things… like oh I don’t know UT and OU leaving.
And hopefully no one dies negotiating the next TV deal.

Good catch on the typo. No one will die. As for how the contract ends up, time wil tell. But don’t worry the three AAC schools will still end up with better deal, the Leftover 8 are the ones that will looking to make sure their deal isn’t worse than PAC
No one in the big seems to be worried about the future TV deal. There is enough evidence to show that it will still be more than enough to satisfy all the remaining schools. I saw a CBS article that predicts it will only drop to $20 million at worst.

a couple of things. i do wonder if there was pressure on BB to resign, after the OU and UT defections. And, fwiw, it does sound like he will be around to help with any transition. i do think that the USF fans on here are trying to "interpret" this, from their perspective of bitterness and loss, at not being good enough at this for the B12.

This is a positive development for the future of the Big 12. They need some one with a positive relationship with big media. Bowlsby has handled himself inappropriately for his position publicly and is to big of a risk for the future of the conference to stay at the helm.

This must be the cue for the AAC to raid the Big 12.

RE: Big 12 Commissioner to Step Down
I like the names that are being speculated in recent articles.
Oliver Luck is my favorite.
I like Mack Rhoades and Greg Byrne too. I’m a little surprised they would even be interested in the job.
I’m cool with a search firm finding someone completely random too. I just think that the Big12 needs a power broker that already has heavy ties to the CFP and other commissioners. So that list is pretty short.
I’m surprised in the timing too. I think it’s clear that Bowlsby has lost his influence. There were rumors he was retiring soon even before the TX/OU situation. I would have thought Bowlsby would at the very least stay till the new members are completely in. I don’t think the current members trust Bowlsby to negotiate the tv deal before retiring. He’s not motivated to get the best deal for the future he’s not going to be around to handle the resulting fallout.
Better to bring someone in who is going to be accountable for the new tv deal.

Since I’m a USF fan that replied here to the thread, I will answer your remark the same way that I have done before.
1. I’m not bitter, we were not chosen to go because there were better options, that falls entirely on USF’s leadership.
2. Regardless of who does the next Big12 deal it will be better than the current AAC one so those leaving AAC will gain.
3. The only conference USF might be able to move up should it right it’s ship it’s the Big12, so rooting for it to fail it’s against what’s might be our next conference.
I guess that any comments that are not rosy and unicorns about the future Big12 on this board are looked upon by some of those leaving as “ bitterness”
As I stated before,we will find out once those negotiations end whether the Big 12 ends up better than now and how they compare to PAC .

90 days is pretty fast, but understandable in the current environment.

The B-12 either has a very short list, or already has their new commissioner lined up for announcement with this short time in place.

Need to replace him before the next tv deal. Want the new guy to be accountable for the tv deal. I don’t want the new guy pointing the finger at the previous staff and a tv deal he inherited.
PAC replaced their Commissioner before the tv negotiations too.

Bowlsby's retirement is not at all a surprise. As others said he was planning on retiring before the new TV contract anyways. I'm sure the conference has been putting together a list of candidates and vetting them.

I'm an Aresco stan, but him becoming the Big12's new commissioner would be a seriously awkward thing for the Houston, Cincinnati and UCF crowd.
In this particular case I'd think it would represent a huge conflict of interest.

RE: Big 12 Commissioner to Step Down
Mack Rhoades was asked if the new Big12 members will have a say in picking the new Big12 Commissioner.
08:30 min
Sic'em 365 Host: "How much do, I mean I guess they're not official members yet, do the new folks get a say in this?
Mack Rhoades: "Umm, yea that's another interesting question and I think the process is to be determined. I know the press release talks about getting a search firm involved. I think that process is still probably fluid. There will be a space for the new schools... to be updated and to have influence. But I would think that certainly the 8 remaining would be the primary drivers. It can even be a smaller group of the 8 when you think of the presidents. Again, one person's opinion"

I don't think so... I read the BigXII bylaws, and it clearly states once a school announces its INTENTION to leave, it gives up any and all voting rights.

I do not see it happening, but I agree it would bee a good hire for media contract talks.
