Cancelled because of a chance of rain? Bunch of sissies down south. Ice on the lake hasn't even broken up yet up here. Raining and supposed to get up to a balmy 41 today...I may wear shorts on my daily hike.

Get the feeling that this staff are not huge fans of the spring game concept.

Correct. Fick has never run it as a "game", as many programs have and like what UC ran back in the Dantonio/BK days of the Red and Black game. It has basically been a practice with game like simulation and scrimmage. I seem to recall Chad and possibly even CLF stating that if he had his way it would just be an additional practice, and avoid it all together. Luke is very much a coach at heart, happier blowing a whistle and being with his guys instead of schmoozing with the alumni and fans like a lot of other coaches out there.

Good assessment. We had the "schmoozer" in Tommy T. and I definitely prefer this coach who is focused on the recruitment, player development, and team results.

Honestly, I don't think a spring game in a major league city like Cincinnati would ever get the traction and focus it receives in "football factory" towns like Columbus. Not having a big spring extravaganza doesn't mean we don't have a great, and growing, football program.

Open up the concessions and ask a few food trucks to join. Beer Garden for the adults with local bevs. Open up the athletic facilities for tours. Could even gear the event later in the afternoon/early evening and cap it off with a fireworks show.

Great way to showcase the University, as well as athletics dept.

I've been proposing a Fan Fest for years. In addition to all the things you mention they could honor some past players and coaches. Dan Hoard could be the emcee, along with Jim Kelly, Terry Nelson, etc.

Great idea Clifton. Introduce younger fans/supports to past Bearcat celebrities. With the advent of the B12, hand out B12 swag as well. Get everyone pumped.

Bolded, I agree on both counts.

Weather was unpleasant, at best, last year for the spring game and it appears it will be downright lousy this Saturday. Too bad too as we're coming off the greatest season ever; interest should have been high previewing the '22 'Cats.

Regarding a summer Fan Fest, bring it on. There is no time for UC Athletics to sit back on what was accomplished last year. It should be pedal to the metal for that type of event and more with the Big 12 on the next horizon.

Activities considered should include a coaches caravan hosted by Dan Hoard visiting selected OH cities where alumni, fans, and friends of UC can gather to meet some UC coaches and show the colors; a Bearcats Night @ GABP for a Reds game, some special recognition @ PBS during a Bengals game, and a midday, summer fan event on Fountain Square. Every effort should be made to create the most preseason buzz ever. The goal should continue to be selling out the entire season in Nippert before the first kickoff.

I like the caravan idea. Heck bring it up to West Chester and Dayton too while we are it.

Caravan idea around the state is good. While we are at it, see if the Indians, as well as various minor league teams around the state, will do a Bearcats first pitch.

The Reds do a UC night. Be nice to have presence outside of the tri-state. Cedar Point used to have the TTFC band play at their park. Have something at Cedar Point for a day too.

Absolutely. We need to expand beyond just the city’s team. Heck, even Pitt has a fan following such that they have radio affiliates in different cities:

Ambridge: WMBA (1460 AM)
Beaver Falls: WBVP (1230 AM)
Bedford: WBFD (1310 AM)
Harrisburg: WTKT (1460 AM)
Indiana: WCCS (1160 AM & 101.1 FM)
Johnstown: WCRO (1230 AM)
Meyersdale/Somerset: WQZS (93.3 FM)
Pittsburgh: KDKA (93.7 FM)
Uniontown/Meyersdale: WMBS (590 AM & 101.1 FM)
Youngstown: WLLF (790 AM & 96.7 FM)

Would love to get some UC coverage in the middle & northern parts of the state. For years, UofL broadcasted in Cincy. This was even pre-ACC. Love to see this even in NKY and Eastern IN.

The last Spring game that I went to, and I think the last that was actually played, Fick did a really nice job with the fans. He engaged with people and talked with them. He didn't seem uninterested. He signed my daughter's football. It was the same way on the boat ride. To your point, it's very possible he'd rather not though.

I am a big fan of the spring game and making it as big of an 'event' as possible. Helps engage fans, impresses recruits, etc. I've tried to go to almost every one over the past 15 years. Remember BK's 2nd year having a very big crowd on hand and loving the environment. I'll take any football we can get during the 8 month sports desert after football ends.

I would agree that these need to be implemented. The radio affiliates may not be necessary as anyone with a smartphone can listen for free on iHeartRadio. I believe UofL pays for the time in Cincinnati. If that's what it would take the money would be better spent in other areas. I'm all for a caravan though, bring it up my way near Cleveland/Akron. UC is growing in popularity up here, feels like a lot more young people are choosing UC since I moved up here in 2016.

Bolded, I would suspect the data might confirm your feelings on that. As an undergraduate I used to ask kids from the Cleveland area how they chose UC. Often, their reply was, "It was as far away from home as I could get and still pay in-state tuition". There are plenty more (and better) reasons to enroll from Cleveland today.

We've been told that applications are up considerably. I hope enrollment management shares more information as we move toward fall semester. It will be interesting to see where the new Bearcats are coming from and I hope central and northern OH are well represented. Being a state's "other" major public research university has worked well for places like Virginia Tech, NC State, and Iowa State. The Big 12 will provide another platform to magnify UC's branding efforts and put some more distance between Cincy and the rest of the publics in the state not named "OSU".

Defense ahead of the offense- whoda thunk?

I feel like this Bryant-Prater battle will wage on throughout the fall. Would not be surprised to see them both playing a lot this season whether for injury or performance reasons. The dude we start out with might not be the dude we end up with.

RE: Spring Game April 9th
Cincinnati has a kicker
Even with all their success last season, the Bearcats were 129th of 130 FBS teams in team FG percentage (43.75%). Northwestern was the only team worse.

Fickell and his staff addressed the kicking woes during the offseason, bringing in transfer kicker Ryan Coe. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound former Delaware standout blasted kick after kick on Saturday, including a scrimmage-ending 48-yarder.

Cincinnati Bearcats kicker Ryan Coe (40) walks the sidelines during a pre-season intersquad scrimmage at the Sheakley Athletics Center in Cincinnati on Saturday, April 9, 2022.

"We're going to put him in some tough situations," said Fickell, who received the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year Award before the scrimmage. "We trust him. We believe in him. We've seen what he can do. You want the guys around him to see what he can do. I think he's going to do a really, really, really good job. We don't want to put too much on him to start with."

Fickell said it's still unclear who will handle the field goals and kickoffs this season. He said he'll do more kick scrimmaging next week.

The Reds do a UC night. Be nice to have presence outside of the tri-state. Cedar Point used to have the TTFC band play at their park. Have something at Cedar Point for a day too.

Absolutely. We need to expand beyond just the city’s team. Heck, even Pitt has a fan following such that they have radio affiliates in different cities:

Ambridge: WMBA (1460 AM)
Beaver Falls: WBVP (1230 AM)
Bedford: WBFD (1310 AM)
Harrisburg: WTKT (1460 AM)
Indiana: WCCS (1160 AM & 101.1 FM)
Johnstown: WCRO (1230 AM)
Meyersdale/Somerset: WQZS (93.3 FM)
Pittsburgh: KDKA (93.7 FM)
Uniontown/Meyersdale: WMBS (590 AM & 101.1 FM)
Youngstown: WLLF (790 AM & 96.7 FM)
Sirius XM

Would love to get some UC coverage in the middle & northern parts of the state. For years, UofL broadcasted in Cincy. This was even pre-ACC. Love to see this even in NKY and Eastern IN.

So many good ideas here - including on p1
Radio, caravan, make it an event, autographs, etc. Has anyone sent any of these suggestions to the athletic department?

I would agree that these need to be implemented. The radio affiliates may not be necessary as anyone with a smartphone can listen for free on iHeartRadio. I believe UofL pays for the time in Cincinnati. If that's what it would take the money would be better spent in other areas. I'm all for a caravan though, bring it up my way near Cleveland/Akron. UC is growing in popularity up here, feels like a lot more young people are choosing UC since I moved up here in 2016.

Both UK & UL have their football & basketball games on local stations here in Cincinnati. It sucks when you can't find a local game on the radio, but you can always find the UK/UL broadcast.
