During Blaines heyday the breakfasts were packed and you got to meet the kids f/f and chat. BB was at its zenith for me.

I feel the same way. Looking at the old photos on the FB site I can name 80% of the players over the last 25 years just by a grainy BW pic. I honestly couldn’t identify half of our current team by photo. So many transfers, guys that never play, and the guys you do care about transfer out. I root for ODU, but it’s a lot easier to be invested when youre rooting for the person wearing the jersey just as much.

RE: Transfer Portals Impact
Man, it’s like a funeral in here. The good old days are gone. Honestly, as far as legacy is concerned it hurts the players more than the fans. Unless they are spectacular or win a championship, they will only be remembered by the last (of 2-4) schools they play for. I certainly don’t remember the players from past decades that were here one or two years and then transferred. My approach now is to invest some time at the beginning of the season to learn a little about each player on the team. And then of course predict what I think their impact will be. I get a lot wrong but it’s fun.

Continuity is the biggest issue in all of this. This is now an era of free agency… players are being recruited all the time now. Not only are you trying to sign them out of high school or junior college, but you also have to re-recruit them at every stage throughout their tenure.

Why aren't we?

Good question that we have 30 years of data showing we are not. There are reasons these schools are in the Big East.

We were at that level during the middle and end of BT's career

Those schools have long, consistent track records of being top 50 teams...and sometimes top 15, top 25, or top 30 teams.

We have been in the top 25 once in history (for a period of time, not full season) and have had 2 top 50 teams in the last 30+ years.

Is that true prior to the last 15-20 years? I had never heard of any of those schools until we started meeting up with them in tournaments etc. By then we were their equals (at least for a while), so I figured it was always that way. Only they’ve risen while we sank since then. Butler wanted to join the MVC for years but couldn’t get an invite because they were considered a lesser program.

Edit: Butler started to be pretty good consistently in 1997. We had the Capel slump, then the BT rebuild back to equivalence, then the BT slump and the JJ fiasco. So there have been times we’ve been level with Butler since 97, but their success has been consistent, whereas ours has more peaks and valleys. Prior to 97 we were fairly similar.

You might have an argument for Butler if comparing 30-40 years ago, but Creighton and Xavier had several top 25 and tourney appearances in the 70s/80s. Butler was in a hotbead of college basketball and highly thought of.

Since 97, ODU has had 2 top 50 seasons (back-to-back with Bazemore).

Butler- 8 top 25 seasons.
Xavier- 11 top 25 seasons
Creighton- 4 top 25 seasons

This is 25 years worth of data. Obviously data from the 70s and 80s is very limited but I don't really see any arguments for ODU being on par with them. We had 2 second round NCAA appearances and zero top 25 appearances. But, even if you wanted to say they were roughly equal (nothing supporting that), that was 30-40 years ago.

Former 4* commits from Michigan to VCU; that's the impact the transfer portal can have if you put together a good PROGRAM. ODU has not and the guy responsible for making that happen is still in charge, even after 2 losing seasons in the last 3. ODU, get your head out of your azz and do something. Where's the leadership, the drive, the vision, the goals? Exactly what do we stand for?

Well said.

Only small consolation is that we were pretty much out of space for adding another name the “Ring of Honor” at the Ted. Don’t need to worry about that in the foreseeable future.

If we got Zeb Jackson, people would complain we are taking a kid that averaged 2 points per game.

Zeb is a talented guy. He's not that different than a lot of highly ranked guys that don't work out and transfer down. Sometimes they find the right spot sometimes you figure out they were overrated.

Wasn’t Austin Trice a former 4* ?

Petey Sessoms and Alex Laughton should be up there.

The only thing that continues to be the most frustrating stat to me (outside of the results obviously) is that a kid comes in shooting those kind of %'s but ends up .328 while on our team. Just a consistent theme.

RE: Transfer Portals Impact
I think you get what you put into getting to know our players as individuals. I can guarantee that if you attended this year's Meet the Monarchs dinner and the breakfasts you would have seen a fully engaged crowd of fans who support the team through the good times and bad and made a point of going up to speak to each of the players. To say that that has changed since Blaine left the program is simply not true.

Yes, this program has been in a steep decline and, yes, it is time for a new coaching staff, but you will still find the same level of support for these players if you would simply attend these events. And they've been fun as well even though Coach Jones does not have the same personality as Blaine Taylor.

I am convinced it is mostly the offensive system. Guys just don't get as very many good rhythm looks from 3 in JJ's offense. Its not like our guys are missing a ton of good looks that they are stepping into and shooting in rhythm, they just don't get very many of those. They don't get transition looks from three and they don't get looks early in the set. There is just nothing in JJ's offense that is conducive to shooting well from anywhere but the elbow.

I disagree....with the exception of a few games, we couldn't hit a wide open 3 if our life depended on it. That to me was the main difference in the games we lost. Other teams had a guy or two who could knock it down from 3. We would get wide open looks and clank it off the rim.

There is a difference between an open look and a rhythm look.

I agree. Those wide open looks we got were not part of the plan.

But just overall not great on the offensive side of the ball in general. This list says we're dead last in 3 pt %.

Effective FG % 46.9% (#298)
FTA/FGA 0.343 (#66)
Free Throw % 67.2% (#320)
Three Point % 29.0% (#350)
Two Point % 48.1% (#239)
Shooting % 43.1% (#215)
Shooting Efficiency 1.013
FGM/Game 24.4 (#236)
FGA/Game 56.5 (#229)
3PM/Game 4.3 (#355)
3PA/Game 14.8 (#354)
FTM/Game 13.0 (#137)
