Next season looks a lot brighter than it did last week. You knew Scotty had a significant transfer in the works. If Ben Johnson can effectively replace CJ, we will again be in the ASUN mix

RE: 2022-23 Season
Verbal Commits reports that FGCU has 4 commitments from transfers. 3 of the 4 are 4 star high school recruits. They are reloading the talent. 4 stars is no guarentee of being a great player, but it certainly is an indication of a high talent level. One of the xfers is 6'11" 260 lbs, four stars. Unlike last season, these transfers are not one year players.

As expected Doug is to be the next mens coach. They are probably doing this because of recruiting.

Probably a good move. Doug runs most of the practices I’ve attended.

RE: 2022-23 Season
The off season never stops me from thinking about BU hoops. I was going to speculate about next season's starting five. It is much more up in the air than normal. Instead of the starting five, here is what I think the depth chart may look like.

PG:
Jaylen Fairman
Ben Johnson
Michael Bova
Landin Hacker

SG:
Justin Betts
Ben Johnson
Garret Tipton
Drew Comer
Peter Suder

SF:
Alec Friem
Sam Devault
Bash Wieland
Zac Jennings

PF:
Curt Hopf
L. T. Hatton
Nick Thelan
Sam Devault
Eli Roberts

Scotty is really playing positionless basketball, so these positions, although not completely meaningless, are very fluid. I actually think they have more relavance to the defensive end than the offensive end.
There are three guys who will likely start and play alot of minutes: Betts, Pfriem, and Hopf. I am speculating that Johnson and Hatton will join them in the starting five, but Garret Tipton is a very strong possibility. Whether he starts or not, he will probably be in the top five of minutes played.

Point guard is a big unknown. My doubts about Johnson are that he is more of a shooting guard than point guard, which really means that there are questions about whether he can match up well with small, lighting quick guards. Fairman may be a better defender and pusher of the ball. If Scotty wants to play up tempo, Fairman may be the only real option. Since neither have actually played any college basketball, I am clearly speculating.

Betts, Pfriem(healthy) and Hopf are locks, and the transfer is too. I would roll on Johnson if he is as good as advertised, gives you the 4 out look.
Tipton, Thelan, Devault off the bench. Incoming frosh bench or RS unless they are Braydon Hobbsesque.
The DD thing was expected.

I hear ya.

From what I remember reading and seeing in some clips, Johnson could dish the ball nicely and snag some rebounds in high school, but I envision him as more of a strict shooting guard (and hopefully a very good one) at the D-I level in college. Strikes me as having a go-all-out attitude too. Can't wait to see him get some game action.

I'm really excited about the Hatton pickup too.

RE: 2022-23 Season
Looks like BU is trying another petition to get the D-I transition period reduced, based on a "hey, we've been Division I-compliant in lacrosse for many years" argument:
https://www.wave3.com/2022/06/02/bellarm...igibility/

Knowing the NCAA, I'm not too optimistic about the chances, but it's worth a try!

Based on this story, it looks like the season opener will be against the University of Louisville.

CRAWFORD | Seth Walsh, age 7 and a cancer survivor, signs on with Bellarmine hoops https://www.wdrb.com/sports/crawford-set...20cc2.html

Nice piece on Hatton. His father and Roberts' father "go way back."

Another story about Bellarmine freshman Pete Suder, who played for the Indiana All Stars last weekend.

Like his father, Peter Suder aims to be a 'complete player' for Bellarmine basketball

ASUN Schedule is out. BU opens at home with Liberty on Dec. 29. Kinda hard to discern the divisions but it looks to me like BU is in with EKU, Liberty, Jax St, Queens, Central Arkansas and Austin Peay?....seems a little loaded to me.

18 conference games and play everyone at least once

Yeah, looks like a divisional shake-up; it's not completely clear to me, but may be Liberty and Queens in the West, with Lipscomb and Jax State in the East.

RE: 2022-23 Season
Thanks for the scoop, HP.

Whitaker was a KY Junior All-Star who can hit the three and led his team to the Sweet Sixteen.

Lux can "splash it" too and may grow beyond his current 6'5" (a la Benedetti?).

Nice pickups, but I'd still like to see BU pick up some size for the future.

Agreed, BU lost out on 6'9" Sam Orme of Carmel (teammate of Suder) as he picked Belmont over Bellarmine yesterday

Crud. Carmel has a nice program (so I'm happy that Suder is "in the fold").

Also excited to see what Hatton does. And, with the "anything goes" transfer free-for-all, I guess Orme (or some other big man) could wind up at the "better" BU one day. 03-wink

Strength coach Steve Hartman left, heard he got a better job, also his assistant is no longer listed on website. Football shows no strength coach, wonder if they were pliling too much on their plate.
