ACC formulation competitive with SEC/B10
I just had a thought about how ESPN can make the ACC dollar competitive with the SEC and B10 and make some money for ESPN.

Lure PSU and MD, transfer SC, and bring ND up to full time:

ACC North - ND, Pitt, PSU, MD, Syracuse, BC
ACC Central - VT, UVa, NC State, UNC, Clemson, South Carolina
ACC South - Miami, FSU, GT, Louisville, WF, Duke

The SEC could then plug the SC hole with West Virginia so that anytime WVa plays Pitt, VT, Penn State, MD, etc., it's ACC vs. SEC.

A 12 school B10 could look to add Kansas and Colorado to get back to 14.

The ACC could play 5 in division, and rotate 4 of the other 12 once every third year.

An annual schedule for ND would be as follows:

Pitt
PSU
MD
BC
Syracuse
Miami/FSU/Clemson
NC State/WF/UNC
Duke/GT/Louisville
SC/VT/UVa
Navy
Southern Cal
Open

An annual schedule for Clemson would be:

South Carolina
NC State
UNC
UVa
VT
WF/Duke/BC
Syracuse/Pitt/Louisville
FSU/Miami/GT
ND/MD/PSU
Open

Getting PSU will solve a lot of problems for the ACC. But the question is how. 03-phew

The how was easy until MD's System President spilled the beans.

It's simple actually - just get together an offer sheet from ESPN. They are not "happy" in the Big 10. They should be "happier" in the ACC. The money has to be close, not the same, but close.

If you move PSU, MD moves. A lot do not want MD back, but the ******** who engineered that are now gone. The other question is what is the value of being able to compete in football worth to SC.

From a stadium size standpoint you add:

1. PSU - 110K
2. South Carolina 77K
3. ND - 77K

Then it falls as:

1. PSU 110K
2. Clemson 84K
3. FSU 79K
4. Tie SC 77K, ND 77 K
6. VT 67K
7. Tie Louisville 65K, UVa 65K
9. NC State 59K
10. GT 55K
11. MD 54K
12. UNC 50K
13. Syracuse 49K
14. BC 45K
15. Duke 40K
16. WF 32K

Honorable mention Pitt 68K, Miami 64K

RE: ACC formulation competitive with SEC/B10
From a Clemson perspective, I would rather see Louisville, Duke, and WF in the Central and NCSU, Clemson, and South Carolina in the South. You would then have:

ACC North - ND, Pitt, PSU, MD, Syracuse, BC
ACC Central - VT, UVa, UNC, Louisville, WF, Duke
ACC South - Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson, South Carolina, NCSU

An annual schedule for Clemson would be:

South Carolina
NC State
FSU
GT
Miami
Pitt/Louisville/PSU
VT/Syracuse/BC
WF/Duke/UNC
MD/ND/UVA
Open
Open
Open

This would allow Clemson to regularly schedule VT, PSU, and ND which are the North and Central division teams that would generate the most interest for Clemson fans as well as likely providing the most compelling conference games for the TV network (ESPN).

From a football perspective, I think this is the best possible scenario for Clemson and the ACC assuming the ACC remains alive and Clemson remains a member. Of course, this is all a pipe dream as ND is never joining the ACC in football, PSU/MD are never leaving the BIG, and USC is never leaving the SEC as things stand today.

Maybe BC, Syracuse, and Pitt were correct all along and they should rejoin the Big East and become football-only members of a division-less ACC. That's a 22-game round-robin ACC schedule for basketball.

No clue how that would affect payouts, just something to chew on, and not necessarily something I want to happen.

Not going to happen?

I don't know. The conferences are just a reflection of regional cultural differences so as those regions change over time you could very well see movement from the North East into what is called the Big 10.

Culturally the B10 is Minneapolis, to Chicago, to Cleveland and if you can fit into that you can fit.

The ACC is Atlanta to DC.

The SEC is New Orleans to Memphis to Jacksonville.

The P12 is LA to SF.

There are a lot of periphery schools that fit elsewhere and the de facto Mason Dixon line continues to squiggle around. I never expected the California/Pacifica line to skip all the Mormons and show up in Colorado and New Mexico.

Give it 50 years. Who knows what might happen by then. 04-cheers

RE: ACC formulation competitive with SEC/B10
If you were to reconstitute an ACC from scratch as the Eastern Conference north to south and picked the schools relative to size, mission, etc, etc, this is the grouping for football and basketball:

North - ND, Purdue, Indiana, Pitt, Syracuse, BC
East - Rutgers, MD, UVa, VT, UNC, Duke
South - NC State, WF, Clemson, South Carolina, GT, Miami

Noticeably absent are Penn State and Florida State.

You would need a human size can of WD40 to squeeze all those egos into one room.

The ideal ACC is a 10 team conference:

Maryland, UVa, Virginia Tech, Carolina, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Clemson and Georgia Tech.

Of course if this were to happen, I suppose the ACC would have to keep Florida State and Miami and become a 12 team conference.

I suppose the ACC at 12 would mirror the PAC at 12 to give the P level 12, 16, 16, 12 with the Big 12 taking the tweener spot from the AAC.

If ND decides to join the BIG, the BIG will let ND choose its companion. But I don’t know whether ND can take all three: Pitt, Cuse and BC. Among these three, Pitt would fit the best in the BIG in my opinion.

And no, UMCP is not coming back unless PSU leaves for the ACC, meaning never...
