Football drives the bus, so adding them would make little difference.

Football drives the bus, but one of the ways the AAC has differentiated itself from other non-P5 in a way that's going to be more difficult now. I would not advocate taking good basketball schools with bad football programs as the latter outweighs the former. But good basketball programs without football programs don't have that sort of downside (and don't get so much of the payout).

The AAC is in danger of being a one-bid league, and that's what adding the teams would have helped avoided. As well as keeping the conference competitive with or ahead of the MWC and especially the A10.

Fingers crossed that the new adds will step up. UAB and UNT seem committed and invested in being good. CUSA was even almost 2 bid this season with UAB and UNT. FAU even started showing signs of life finally. I don’t foresee a 3 or 4 bid American happening regularly in the future but I could see a 2 bid with occasional 3 between Wichita, UAB, UNT, Memphis, SMU, Temple. The only issue with that is Memphis could be seeing a postseason ban for a few years. Could make it hairy for a bit. The interesting thing is that, apart from a top 10 team like Houston, UAB and UNT are, as of recent, better teams than UCF and Cincinnati. UAB is both historically and recently better than UCF.
