The Oscars ain't what it used to be, ratings-wise.
Nothing is anywhere close to where it used to be ratings-wise except for sports (particularly NFL football). That's the biggest reason why sports rights keep climbing higher and higher and higher.
The highest-rated shows on TV today would *all* be cancelled if they got those same ratings 10 years ago. The Oscar ratings actually look excellent (at least not counting last year) when compared to how many fewer people now watch linear network TV at any given time outside of sports.
There might be more total TV viewers available as a whole, but that audience is now MUCH more dispersed than ever before. The *relative* power of the Oscars is actually arguably higher in the TV universe. There's no such thing as a "regular" TV show like Seinfeld or Friends that can draw massive audiences anymore, which elevates the *relative* value of live events (e.g. sports, awards shows, news, etc.) and/or shows that have sports-like properties (e.g. reality show competitions) even if their absolute viewership has gone down.
i.e. the interest level for the Oscars has cratered
well its basically watching a bunch of egotistical self-obsessed celebrities perform a circle jerk lol
Yeah but it's always been that. So that still begs the question of why ratings have nose-dived, LOL.

Well, in fairness, while ratings had been slowly declining, last year was the only year it nose-dived, with extenuating circumstances. If viewership rebounds to 20+ million this year then it was just a one year aberration based on those extenuating circumstances.

Well, IIRC, the Oscars drew audiences of 40 million as recent as a decade ago. So I'm not sure 20+ million means there hasn't been a big decline.
I do agree that we can't count last year's 9 million. That is a virus exception.

RE: Is the NCAAT REALLY going up against the Oscars?!
40 years ago it was fairly common for the NCAA national championship game and the Oscars to be on the same Monday night in March. Gradually over time the NCG got pushed to early April while the Oscars moved first to Sunday night, then moved from March to late February.
Not sure why the Oscars have moved backed to late March, does it have to do with the pandemic?

Thank you! It took three pages to bring it up. The Academy didn't permanently move the ceremony to a Sunday night until March 1999. It was typically a weeknight event for the most part and 1999 was the first Sunday ever.

Liberal politics has been a part of the Oscars for a long time. I remember controversy back in the 1970s when some used their acceptance speeches to make political statements, almost always left-wing.
IIRC Marlon Brando and Vanessa Redgrave did this. But I think its being taken to a woke extreme these days.

If people start using their speeches to call for tax cuts, a strong national defense, school choice, and against teaching sexual content to 5-year-olds, then you can credibly accuse people of being inconsistent about their opposition to political speeches.

I think they just don’t see much crossover in audiences. And I would t miss the tourney for anything and I have never watched the Oscars anyway.

The "People still xyz?" trope is tiresome. The world is certainly much larger than any one of us and/or our specific family/friend group. While Oscars ratings are way down, so is everything else on TV. It's still one of the largest TV events of the year that isn't an NFL game or super high profile sporting event (e.g. CFP, NBA Finals, World Series).
Frank, what you posted is true, so far as it goes. But surely you won’t deny that the Oscars, as a pop-culture/media event, are nowhere near as “big” as they were a generation ago. My parents were as square as they come, but I remember them watching the Oscars in the 1980s, if for no other reason than they knew it’s what everybody would be talking about at the office the next few days. The Oscars of 2022 hold a very small fraction of that mass-appeal. The same is true, of course, for many other televised events, both of the showbiz-variety and others, as you correctly pointed out.
For me, the bottom-line takeaway from this is that our society/culture is simply more splintered and compartmentalized than it used to be. Whether that’s good, or bad, or some of both, the fact is that America of today no longer has the kind of unifying events that it once did. Not even the Super Bowl, really, has the same kind of ecumenical role it once did. Although it has retained a higher portion of it than just about anything else.

Still, once they decided to move this year's oscars from its original scheduled date of Feb 27, 2022, you would think they would push them out to a Sunday that has no ncaa tourney games. If they would have pushed them out 1 or 2 more weeks, they could have avoided any conflicts. Although it is true that the Sunday games are done by 8pm EDT, which was also true the last normal year in 2019.
Side note- I had forgotten this, but last year's sweet 16 games were played on sat and sun with late games on Sunday, with the elite 8 games on Monday and Tues. This was almost better because they could do quadruple headers for the sweet 16 games.
