RE: Josh Minott BOH!!!!
And yall keep saying no jumper, you think Penny didnt know about his shooting when he signed him? You think he was told he would be pigeonholed to pick up scrap minutes when Deandre gets tired or that he was offered a CHANCE to play multiple positions? I promise what Penny offered him to get him varied greatly from what he received when he got him. Thats the bottom line.

Play him at the three (14% from 3) ahead of Landers?

I agree he could have gotten a few extra minutes here and there. He has a HUGE upside, but the last 15 games of the year Penny wasn't worried about "development" he was worried about "winning" and several games Josh's defense (or lack thereof) required he stay off the floor.

Play him ahead of Dandridge. When Duren goes out, move DeAndre to the 5 & play Josh at the 4. Penny looked for excuses to not play Josh, but then played Emoni, who also struggled with those same lapses. Penny wasn’t committed to Josh & it was apparent. He’ll end up somewhere else & thrive…he’s just that kind of kid. On the bright side, we’ll get Malcolm back.

Could also slide Landers to the 2 guard instead of playing his son there at all. Who cares if he cant shoot, neither can his son.

Pretty fuggin dumb comment.

Josh shot 14% from three, Jayden shot 46% from three.

Furthermore, Jayden didn't play any real significant minutes at the end of the year and his few double digit minute games were in blowouts or when half the team was injured/covidy.

Man I know about his %, he accomplished his best games against scrubs. Jayden was clearly never going to be a real factor against any good competition, thats why he had to stop playing him.

So that defeats your whole argument about "sliding Landers to the 2" but Penny couldn't because his son was there when you just acknowledged he was wasn't playing his son.

I agree with the first part of what you say but I don't think he will end up at any of the schools you mentioned because he would be competing against other high quality talent for playing time at those schools just like he did here. He needs to be playing for a school that needs him as a full-time starter every game. Best of luck to Josh.

Wish we could have kept him. Great kid. Really hoping if his draft position doesn't work out to his liking, he will consider returning.

Baylor would play him a lot.

I think he needs to feel commitment. He did not get that here.
We’ll see where he ends up…

I would say he could have been the 6th man and would have got at least 20 minutes, but Penny, Larry and Cody know way more about basketball than I do.

When he was on the court, he stood out. Like I noted, he had flashes of brilliance.

His hands were incredible and his ability with on-ball defense to pop balls loose or strip guys was something I had never seen from a frosh big.

His main issue was getting lost on defense. Time and time again he was the guy who was supposed to be on some dude who was taking and making those wide open threes that killed us so often.

This one was no surprise to me. I really think he is gonna be an NBA player eventually, but he is about a year to early. He will star for another team after he isn't drafted. Good luck to the young man and his future team (long as they ain't playing Memphis).

To be honest his shooting form bothered me more than his defense. Next to Timberlake he had the worst looking jump shot on the roster.

Yup. Go rewatch games and see how often threes are made with Josh in the game and Josh is just aimlessly standing in the middle of the lane not guarding anybody... It happened a lot including the Gonzaga game. Just like Moussa could not be played down the stretch because of free throws, Josh could not be played in tight games because he was consistently lost on defense and giving up a big dunk or three not only is a points swing but also a momentum swing.

Penny clearly values defense over offense. If you are not cutting it on D then you are not going to play...

Weak defense hurt his playing time. but he is likely to go back to school just like Cisse.. Penny want his players to sacrifice for the team and some kids are not willing to do that.. Period.

Looks like Williams will come back for one more year :)

The same people complaining about Josh not getting enough minutes are the ones complaining that Penny didn't stick with his veterans/starters enough.

Neither Williams or Minott are a 5.

No they aren't.
His family was vocal about playing him too much at the 4.
They wanted him to be played at the 3.
Going small ball with DW and JM would only work for a few minutes here and there - it would not lead to a ton of more minutes for Minott.
And you would still have the family chirping about playing him at the 4.

Maybe he gets there. But he does not have the offensive skill set of a 2/3 nor can guard the 2/3 position. If you cannot play the position offensively and you cannot defend the position defensively then that should probably not be your position.

This is what is really tough about the portal and transfer rules. A kid like Josh should be sticking around and working on developing his game. If he would listen and work then he could absolutely develop into a three. Instead they have family/friends in their ear and they know they can transfer without penalty. So, instead of working and developing to earn their spot they just decide it is the coaches fault and take off...

I think his shot is easily correctable. He shoots 75% from the line with good form. He just needs to translate that form to his jumper. His defense kept him out of games towards the end of the year. He tries to use those long arms or his too much going for a steal or a block. Because of that he tends to be out of position and can't recover when the guy he is defending goes by him.

Some say that if Minott returns to college, it will actually be at Memphis.
So the door is not closed.
But it sounds to me like it's NBA or G-league for him.
