They don't come to play for the name on the chest anymore. It's all about how much uncle ray ray and granma ma can cash in and are you gonna play my boa.

Nevermind I could take him off the dribble.

Penny blew it with Josh.

How, though? Play him more at Center?
Play him ahead of Deandre?
Play him at the three (14% from 3) ahead of Landers?

I agree he could have gotten a few extra minutes here and there. He has a HUGE upside, but the last 15 games of the year Penny wasn't worried about "development" he was worried about "winning" and several games Josh's defense (or lack thereof) required he stay off the floor.

Same, his D was what kept him off floor more than anything IMO. He'd get lost on switches more than anybody else and he's a frosh so that's how it goes. Sure he'd gotten better as time went on.

I've never understood this narrative about Josh's lack of defense. It's simply not true. Guy was blocking shots and stealing the ball every time he was in the game.

Exactly. Where was he gonna play and over who? His freethrow shot is weird. Does his jumper look the same?

Play him ahead of Dandridge. When Duren goes out, move DeAndre to the 5 & play Josh at the 4. Penny looked for excuses to not play Josh, but then played Emoni, who also struggled with those same lapses. Penny wasn’t committed to Josh & it was apparent. He’ll end up somewhere else & thrive…he’s just that kind of kid. On the bright side, we’ll get Malcolm back.

Don't have time to actually look up his D stats so this is just my eyeball opinion but he struggled with switches and closeouts mightily. Lot of his blocks were on the backside because he got beat or was late to begin with. Again, I totally think he would have and will (albeit somewhere else) get better over time but IMO that was the weakest aspect of his game.

Could also slide Landers to the 2 guard instead of playing his son there at all. Who cares if he cant shoot, neither can his son.

I don't think a Dandridge for Josh swap is apples to apples but I def agree with you re: Jaden. Only thing I can figure is Penny thought Jaden played more consistent D then Josh.

The ESPN notification on my phones says...

Minott to enter NBA draft
Josh Minott will initially keep his college eligibility but has no plans to return to Memphis, he tells Jonathan Givony

Hate to hear that.

Pretty fuggin dumb comment.

Josh shot 14% from three, Jayden shot 46% from three.

Furthermore, Jayden didn't play any real significant minutes at the end of the year and his few double digit minute games were in blowouts or when half the team was injured/covidy.

I wish the kid well and wish he would have stayed to develop more under Penny. However most of his blocks were from other players getting beat and he rotated over. He hardly ever blocked his own man's shot. He constantly went for the head fake and chased his man and fouling.

Man I know about his %, he accomplished his best games against scrubs. Jayden was clearly never going to be a real factor against any good competition, thats why he had to stop playing him.

Yep, hate to see him go, but this is on him more so than the coaching staff. He had a long way to go defensively (as many of you have pointed out) and had no jumper. Very athletic, so many see the big dunks and athletic blocked shots and don’t see that, beyond his athletic capabilities, he has a lot of work to do. Wasn’t good enough to get more minutes ahead of the other guys on the roster, plain and simple.

But don’t get me wrong, he’s got the potential to be an NBA player and I wish he’d stay at Memphis. He’s just not quite there yet.

I think its a long shot for him to make an NBA roster, but I do think he’ll move on to a blue blood program… like a Duke, UNC or Gonzaga. He’s that type of kid.
