Acuff is an excellent pick-up. He’s a terrific 3-point shooter at 39 percent. Commits few turnovers.

Hm is he as good as Monty was last year?

I think Monty (SF) and Acuff (SG) play different positions. If comparing both players - we would need to compare Precovid Monty

RE: Eastern Michigan 2022 Men's Basketball Verbal Commits
Acuff should be judged on his own merits. He’s a 6’6” shooting guard. He averaged 23 mpg, and 5 points per game. He didn’t shoot very often. In that regard, he’s very much like Spottsville.

EMU needs more scoring from him, and hopefully he’ll shoot more.

He shot three’s at 39 percent for the season, but at only 28 percent in conference play. So, it’s an open question how well he’ll shoot three’s for EMU. shoot on three’s for EMU.

On the other hand, he shot two’s at 50 percent for the season and 55 percent in conference play. So he should score quite well shooting two’s. If he’s off shooting three’s, he should stick to shooting two’s.

He shot 56.7 percent at the rim, and 37 percent on two-point jump shots. He took more jumpers than he did st the hoop. He’d be wise going to the hoop more at EMU.

He rarely went to the foul-lline last season. His assist, rebounding, and turnover stats are average. He rarely made steals. His defense is sub-par.

EMU still needs to sign another good SG and SF as well.

My point is have we really improved at SG over last year. Time will tell. Monty scored a lot of points and someone needs to pick up the slack.

Woah, woah, woah. I got lambasted for talking about last years players on this thread.

In any case, Acuff is a nice pick up, but he alone can not make up for the losses of Monty, McBride, and Spottesville. No way. As of now, EMU’s collective backcourt is a step back from last year. My hope is that Rice, Luka, and even Noah all improve year over year to make up for that gap- along with the addition/improvement of Acuiff. And that allows focus on getting a true Small Forward in here. (Quality Center will be nice too, but not necessary in the MAC)

[/quote]

Monty didn’t score a lot of points in conference play.

Acuff could score more points than the 5.4 ppg he averaged at Duquesne, but only if he shoots more often than once every 4 minutes of playing time at Duquesne. As that’s not going to cut it at EMU.It remains to be seen if he will.

If he shots more and shoots three’s at 39 percent as he did for Duquesne, than points wise he will be an upgrade, as McBride did not have a particularly good year shooting three’s (20 percent in MAC play) and Spottsville although he shot two’s well, like Acuff, didn’t shoot very often.

Acuff is a better shooter on two’s and three’s, and commits far fewer turnovers than Spottsviille, but he doesn’t make as many OR’s, steals nor play as good defense as Spottsville’s did last season. While Acuff should contribute to more scoring opportunities via his non-shooting stats, Spottsville contributed overall even more scoring opportunities.

It will be competitive to see if Acuff is better than Rice.

So, EMU needs to sign more good shooters. Acuff is a start, but EMU still needs more good shooting guards, SF, and a Center.

Key is signing Hima as he’s a force to be reckoned with inside. As he’s 6’11,” with long arms who’s both strong and quick. Twice as good a shot-blocker as Njie, and will protect the rim so opponents won’t shoot 50 percent on two’s. Can see opponents shooting 44 percent or less on two’s.

Whatever a players rating is in high school goes out the window once you see his college stats.

One can evaluate a player by his college stats and watching him play.

RE: Eastern Michigan 2022 Men's Basketball Verbal Commits
Due to Covid and other issues last season, EMU never got the best from it’s players. One thing is for sure, EMU cannot allow MAC opponents to shoot 51 percent on two’s and 37 percent on three’s as they did.

It’s too early to say whether the recent two transfer commitments upgrade the roster. We need to wait till EMU has a complete roster before making that determination.

Defensively, EMU needs to vastly improve it’s front court. Randle is one positive piece, and combined with a hopefully Hima commitment or someone of his defensive prowess, should vastly upgrade EMU’s interior defense. Playing together should reduce opponents from averaging 76 ppg as they did last season. A good defense should also help EMU’s scoring.

Having a better interior defense should help EMU’s perimeter players by allowing them to concentrate in stopping opponents three balls, and they not helping out as much inside, thus allowing many opponent open three’s as occurred last season.

In addition to Noah, EMU does need to find at least three consistent scorers. . Acuff should be one of them, and hopefully in addition to other new recruits, Rice and Golson are in that mix.

I’m trying to find out how good Orlando Lovejoy is? Is his stats inflated because he played at a charter school?

Even though Lovejoy is an in-coming freshman, a little undersized ( don’t buy he’s 6’2”), he’s a baller who’s very, very good on both sides of the ball. Fills-up a box score. Noah and Orlando should tear-it up in the backcourt.

Thanks ‘79

Seems to be a good shooter but I haven’t seen a video that excites me with his quickness and athleticism. For example, Noah Farrakhan and Ray Lee throw it down on break aways but I didn’t see any dunks by love joy. Most D1 guards can throw it down even Luka can. I’ll search for more videos on him.

I agree. When he drives to hoop in half-court sets, I do think his lack of height, his not having Noah’s hops, and given the fact he’ll be confronted by taller interior defenders will result in his not scoring as well at the hoop as he did in HS.

I assume he’s a decent jump shooter as he shot 57 percent from the field.

I do get the sense he has a high bb IQ and plays with intensity on both sides of the ball, and that should result in assists, rebounds, steals, and a low turnover rate.

I am very excited to have Orlando Lovejoy on the team. But based on those videos (thanks, ‘79), my guess is he is not going to come in as an immediate contributor. Most freshman don’t. Probably like ‘79 said in another thread, “He should see limited playing time off the bench this upcoming year”….

Anyway, I think Acuff should offset some of the backcourt losses (Guards who transfer from Duquesne do very well in the MAC) . And more so that Luka and Rice should see typical improvements in year 2…. Or I am dead wrong, and Lovejoy tears things up as starting PG.

EMU will need scoring both from the starting line-up and the bench. It’s too early to say how Lovejoy will be used. HC may not to want to play a small backcourt of Noah and Lovejoy together. I think they’d be exciting to watch. I suspect Lovelady will get a lot of playing given his skill-set.

Hope 2 of the next 3 players signed earn the right to start. As EMU needs more scoring.

The front court is stronger just by the addition of Randle. It’s very important that EMU now upgrades the Center position.

Another big East Power Forward in Legend Geeter coming in from Providence.

Awesome news!!!

Legend had 15 D1 offers out of high school

Plenty of schools have taken interest in Geeter, as both 247Sports and Verbal Commits list 15 offers for him. Schools like Georgetown, Missouri, Duquesne, Rhode Island and Long Island have each extended offers so far. Western Michigan, Central Michigan Eastern Michigan and Detroit are listed among his offers as well.

Nice find on the old article, Luckey! I really, really like this segment:
“Stone said any college program seeking a player who can play the four or five position and also be able to sink 3-point shots should be looking at Geeter. When opponents would turn up the press on defense, Geeter can also be tasked with bringing the ball up court.”

I think we might have a slightly taller version of Karrington Ward on our hands? Of all the class so far, we might have lucked out with this one.
