Bye Bye Strip Mall on Hillcrest
The strip mall on hillcrest across from Burritoville is coming down. First steps in making the neighborhood better. I remember the Jimmy John's being located in that building. With the movie theater gone, and this soon, they have a chance to make something decent on that spot.

How can the area be safe and fun again if the thugs who live there are still there?

Rumor has it, Burritoville will be making an amusement park on the open lot. Burrocoasters, burrocars, burroslides. Burritos all the time.

Someone should open a Gangland amusement park there. Different “game” areas for shootings, break-ins and thefts, gang wars, carjackings and catalytic converter thefts, drug dealings, etc. You know, just like daily life in the area.

I thought The Jungle was in a stand alone building on Blackhawk Dr. north of the old movie theater. That place has been many different restaurants/bars. It was also the location of murder in 2007.

While not sure all those things occurred in that area, sure most have.

I think this is the time when the responses "crime is everywhere at colleges, look at...." and "Dekalb is a top 50 college town to live in!" come rolling in.

Nope. In this mall.

The building to the north was JP Hannigans in late 80's/early 90's. Not sure what after that.

When did they get rid of the campus theater? When I look on Google Maps street view it is still standing (not sure the date of the street view imagery).

The Jungle had a basement to it, right? I think they used to charge a $5 pizza/entrance fee because the type of liquor license they had required they sell so much food.

I think after Hannigans, there was a short lived sports bar there called Fat Boys in the mid- to late-90s.

I think I was there a few times because they'd have trivia or something some weeknight (with super cheap drinks of course). I'm also pretty sure I was there for a keg 'n eggs on homecoming one year as well. Which was always terrible no matter where you went.

I remember always thinking....hell yeah we'll get some keg 'n eggs!

And then at like 6AM I was always thinking...why in the hell did I ever consider getting up for this?

RE: Bye Bye Strip Mall on Hillcrest
Btw, are there any existing businesses in that strip mall?

I want to say there was a liquor store in the jungle recently because I remember some church group stopping a bunch of guys from looting it a couple summers ago.

And I want to say there was also a liquor store in the old 'Round The Clock restaurant but I could be combining the two into two liquor stores when it's actually just one.

Needless to say...less liquor and/or tobacco stores in that area would be a good thing.

That is a possibility. However, downtown DeKalb has had many old buildings removed and all the new ones are thriving. Of course those are marketed towards grad students and single high earners. If they ever build a new strip mall, it could be an anchor to a better neighborhood in DeKalb.

Get rid of the dregs that live there, and that area will improve immediately.

Assume this includes The Jungle / Red Lion.

Sadly, this won’t take care of the low income housing that was over-built in that area in the early 2000’s boom.

Hopefully it’s addition by sub traction.

Any chance they can “accidentally “ demolish that 7-11 convenience store across the street?

I think you’ve got your bars crossed. The Jungle was on hillcrest, closest building to Annie glidden. It had two floors. The second floor was open in the middle so you could see the stage/dance floor on floor 1. Primarily a Greek bar.

RE: Bye Bye Strip Mall on Hillcrest
The Movie theatre was torn down in the last year or two. I was happy to see it torn down as it really looked bad just sitting there for years. The Jungle was definitely in the mall that is being torn down in the far west corner. The place that was protected from the riots is called Mike's Smoke and Food and is the old spot where the Jungle Liquor store was next to the bar Jungle. The Round the Clock diner is now a liquor store called Thirsty's.

I hope tearing the mall down is a sign of better times in the Greek Row area. As a father of three kids who have lived in Greek Row recently (including one now) it is definitely in need of an overall. The area is rough for sure, and definitely need to clear out the tough crowd for it to ultimately improve. It other threads I have said it, but it is true... the Greek Row area single handedly brings down the entire university. Without this area improving, NIU traction for improved image and enrollment will be stuck in the mud spinning. It really is that simple.
