Rothstein reporting that SMU is hiring Lanier from Georgia State. Looks like UTEP is safe!

Congratulations UTEP. Glad you will be keeping your coach. I think SMU would have been smart to poach him. I think he would have been a better hire than Lanier.

As far as I know Golding turned the job down too. I'm sticking by that story.

Thankfully.

Now lets see if he can retool the team, get us to the tourney, so he can get stolen away next year.

Well, one never really knows but we are encouraged by his coaching and player development. Hoping for better results next year but we will see.

after the way Sonny left SMU we sure as hell aren’t hiring family. Plus we already had a guy hired before his name surfaced by his agent.

Why is it that the new trend isn't coaches using their NCAAT run to get a bigger job, but rather them getting pissed when they don't make the tournament and using that to leave? That seems to be the main reasons why we're losing coaches in CUSA. Curious to see where UNT goes from here.

Circling back to this, it may also be a matter of programs picking up a quality coach without having to pay the NCAA tournament upcharge. Obviously it didn’t happen here but if they did hire McCasland, it’s a bit cheaper doing it now than if UNT made the NCAAs again and especially if they win a game or two, plus he’d probably have more suitors.

If I'm Lofton I am "traveling" to Houston to play for Sampson or following my coach. Just being real.

Cool, it worked out for everyone. McCasland got a raise, we keep our coach, and y'all get your man.

^ This. Our AD has spoken with members of the BOR and UNT is going to step up our game and commit more money and resources to basketball. McCasland is very happy to be staying at UNT. SMU underestimated how committed UNT is to growing our athletics as we transition to the AAC.

Great job NT, we all have to do what we can to go into the AAC as strong as we can. FAU is definitely on the upswing with our program. As long as Dusty stays through the move I feel confident we will continue to get stronger.
