Isn't it really the Power Conferences and the others? Does it matter at all to the average sports fan which conference a university plays in if it isn't in a Power conference?

Should we be talking PCs and non PCs?

It’s a logical thought. It strengthens the idea of being in the Southern Conference to me. Is it worth moving up to the FBS if the power conferences will never allow you entry? I don’t know the answer to that one.

I’ve followed college sports since the 1960s, back when it was NCAA University Division and College Division — with the NAIA at many more schools. If there is one thing in higher education that hasn’t changed - it’s the power structure of college athletics, even accounting for the infusion of TV money as the big boys have grabbed the larger+ majority of that. The power structure has remained constant with an exception here and there. But, Gonzaga will never be offered an invitation to join the PAC 12. App State will never be invited to join the ACC, etc., etc., etc. The only thing that’s changed over these years is the renaming of NCAA classifications and reshuffling of conferences - rearranging the chairs on the deck with the power folks still seated in the big chairs - while consolidating more power (money). All this renaming/shuffling has now reached a point of meaningless absurdity. To the average fan, it’s still MAJOR college - SMALL college sports no matter how many fake-deceptive arrangements the NCAA offers up.
