I'd be surprised if he goes in the first. I think it's most likely that he and Carry are both back competing for MAC POY again next year.

I wonder if people didn't gamble on sports, how much interest would decline as a percentage? My guess is the NFL would take the biggest hit, probably followed by NCAA football and basketball.

If only the coaches knew they would have to ask the booster to bribe the player they wanted. This way the booster at Alabama could do it and claim he did it on his own.

I bet it’s the vast majority. Especially if you count the casual fantasy leagues where significant money goes back and forth. No big deal though. The Roman Coliseum would have only held 10,000 people if they didn’t allow betting on the gladiator matches. Also no ringers in the Ancient Greek Olympics because nobody would have cared if Athens or Sparta won the wrestling title. Or was that Iowa and Penn St?
Heck I bet my wife once on which of our two cats would win an impromptu wrestling match.

In my experiences wagering on CW, Tabby Cats always have the upper paw. In 96, however, I lost 2.5K when the Chesire was defeated by Sebastian the Maine Coon.

They don't have to bribe. Just get Bob the booster that runs a local plumbing business hire the athlete for their name, image and likeness. Doesn't need to be below boards anymore.

Yeah, I remember when the $1mil/season was a big deal, and before you knew it we saw contracts with guys like A-Rod that were getting that every week. And the thought that they gave Garland or whoever the big bucks meant they needed to milk him for everything turned into the goose that lays the Golden eggs needs to be protected with the “load management”. Somehow guys like Nolan Ryan never needed it and somehow threw gas until age 46, and threw his arm out whipping his last pitch at 98mph.

Nolan Ryan was a freak of nature.

I think you saw pitching careers get shortened in the American League in the 70s because of the designated hitter. Pitchers wouldn't get pulled for a pitch hitter, ended up going longer into games and risking injury. In Garland's case, I would argue that a 10 year contract probably should have been met with protecting his arm as the Indians were out of contention by the All-Star break, but we didn't know as much then as we do now about protecting the arm and Frank Robinson was trying to keep his job, so...

That said, a 10-year contract was idiotic. A 3 or 4 year contract would have gotten Garland as the Indians offer blew every other offer away.

This, in a nutshell, sums up my disdain for the current state of affairs. There are a few articles of clothing that I would NEVER wear.

An Akron or Yankees sweatshirt and a Stampeders hat are among them. Rivals are rivals and rivalries make athletics fun. I can't take this anymore!
