Wait till CUSA. You’ll wish you could have that success.

There is no one that sticks out in CUSA. I’m sure we will still have similar success to what Menzies had (5 in 10 years). As long as we get the right coach, we’re good.
I predict NMSU will actually dominate CUSA like they did in the WAC. If the Aggies had stayed in the WAC, I do not think this would be the case. Basically, after a few years the WAC will likely be a more powerful basketball conference than CUSA. The Aggies will continue to be a big fish in a small pond.

Is this a serious post?

Key words, the right coach. The wrong coach and things start heading south. Lamar has so far failed to get the right coach in the last six or seven attempts.

RE: Jans in the mix for K State job
I'm not sure the WAC will strengthen all that much more. It is hard to build on a conference when top players are leaving their respective programs yearly. Losing Fardaws Aimaq and Darrion Trammell setback the progress of Utah Valley and Seattle. Admittedly the portal can also help replenish losses, but a program must have a good coach who knows how to reload a roster rather than rebuild it. I think GCU's Bryce Drew and SFA's Kyle Keller will lead the way. And we know young coaches, Brette Tanner and Chris Victor can coach. But the jury is still out on whether they can sustain (reload) a program with their recruiting. If Billy Gillispie could ever stabilize and settle on a roster, he might coach Tarleton's way up the conference standings.

But looking at the schools in the WAC and CUSA, I doubt the WAC will ever surpass CUSA (yearly) in men's basketball. There might be a year or two where the WAC might be stronger, but I don't think it is sustainable. The coaches are more established, the programs have more tradition, and budget are bigger in CUSA.

Pistol you might be right but should we expect 2 divs for hoops in CUSA going forward or will it be on div for all you think?

This is a few years old now 18-19 budgets but CUSA at the time was at 2.9 million on average per hoops program to the WAC that was at 2.5 million per hoops program. 400k isn't that much. I'd love to see how it looks for the 1st year NMSU and SAM as part of CUSA vs WAC without them. This type of stuff is interesting to me.

I think the majority of WAC fans would agree. The WAC is losing Chicago State, which helps the conference, but will lose NMSU a year later. I think losing NMSU hurts more than losing CSU helps. It’s possible UTA, SFA, and others will improve, but CUSA has more established programs. Those programs are more highly rated than most WAC teams on a yearly basis. Like I have said before, CUSA’s worst program is FIU, followed by Jacksonville State and Sam Houston. No D2 move ups.

However, the difference between the two will probably be negligible. CUSA might have a chance at two bids here and there. The WAC, without NMSU, would have to be extremely lucky to get two.

There’s only 9 teams in CUSA, why would they have divisions?

Greg Heiar's rise as a coach very closely mirrors Chris Jans. Similar background, similar JC coaching success, similar coaching influence (Gregg Marshall), similar coaching philosophy. Heck, Jans coached Greg Heiar in his very first season as a head coach at Kirkwood CC. Heiar has shown to be a proven recruiter. SO, Moccia is rolling the dice with hopefully a Jans clone.

I figured another school is coming to CUSA to make it 10 total.

NMSU UTEP LaTech SHSU + new western add (McNeeseSt)

RE: Jans in the mix for K State job
Some of you posters are mistaken-- CUSA will be several spots above the WAC in conference BB ratings-- especially after the NMSU addition. SHSU, WKU, MTSU, La TECH, Jacksonville St., and Liberty are ALL in the Net top 150. At the same time we jettison S. Miss (341), Marshall (242), and ODU (203).

The WAC loses NMSU (79) and SHSU (152) which will lower their rating as C-USA goes up with only ONE school below 165 (FIU-266).

Sure, but those numbers are from 3 different leagues. It’s impossible for every CUSA school to have a winning record except for FIU. CUSA will probably be better, but the end result will be the same - 1 bid league.

Really the true measurement for all these teams discussed is their OOC records and NET ratings prior to starting conference play. That will be the power rating each school brings into each conference. This past season, NMSU beat Davidson on a neutral court and Washington State on their court. That will definitely help CUSA... if that continues under Greg Heiar.

You are mistaken. A higher rated conference earns other benefits:

--- Higher seed in NCAA; increases chances of a win OR two-- more money and publicity for league

--- Better chance at an occasional second team making the NCAA

---Higher possibility of multiple NIT bids

--- Top teams in a better league will snatch more P5 wins

--- More media mentions

How many at-large NIT bids has CUSA had the last 5 years?

Have those P5 wins and media mentions landed CUSA a better TV contract or reputation? Nope.

In 2021 C-USA had two teams in the NIT and also had two in 2018.

Also you ignored my main point which is C-USA is going to IMPROVE in BB by adding above average teams while dropping below av. teams. A higher ranking means a higher seed----- would you rather be a 12 seed or a 14? Just look at the results-- which seed line has many more NCAA wins?

Additionally IMO the WAC BB rating will drop somewhat-- but C-USA conference rating will go UP a spot or two-- creating a wider gap between the two leagues we are comparing. Just look at the NET ratings and the math.

No. In 2018 and 2021 they had 1 at-large team. That is what I asked.

You then ignored how P5 wins and media mentions are going to increase media deals for the conference.

Both leagues were 12 seeds this year. WAC beat a Big East and CUSA lost to an AAC team. I am not arguing that CUSA will be “better”, it won’t be significant though.

YES. It will be significant. The WAC is losing its top NET team AND another (SHSU) from its top fourth. It will drop some (2-5 spots).

C-USA is adding those same two teams (NMSU-79, SHSU-152) along with Liberty (119; an 85 in 2021) and Jacksonville State (143) while dropping teams with NET ratings of 203, 242, and 341. C-USA will gain (1-2 spots).

The math seems pretty obvious.

When was the last time SHSU beat a Power6 team? Jacksonville State?

What about how these supposed non-conference Power wins are going to help your media deals?

Just look at the NET numbers and do the math. It is easy to see. Goodnight.
