I think this is awful, but here it is:

Quote:Unbalanced schedules: Out!

Playing every team in baseball every single season: In!

Yes, the 2023 schedule will cut back on rivalry games. And in their place, teams will play an NBA-like schedule that involves facing all 29 other clubs, including every one of the 15 in the other league. Here’s a breakdown:

DIVISION GAMES (56): Clubs play all four teams in their division 14 times. (Current total: 19) So that means one three-game series and one four-game series each, both home and road.

OTHER 10 LEAGUE OPPONENTS (60): Those non-division teams within your league? You’ll play them six times apiece — three at home, three on the road. (Current total: six or seven apiece)

INTERLEAGUE SCHEDULE (46): Here’s how this works: Every team plays its interleague “rival” (Mets-Yankees, Cubs-White Sox, you know the deal) four times — two at home, two on the road. (Current total: four or six games, depending on the season)

As for the other 14 teams in the opposite league, you’ll play three games against every one of them. Half are at home. Half are on the road. Then that will flip the following year. So if you miss Mike Trout in your NL city one year, he visits the next year. Get the picture? (Current total: three or four games each versus either four or five nonrival interleague opponents)

I actually like it. You don't need 19 games against your division. Also evens out the games vs the other 10 teams in your league. And it will even out interleague play where the advantage of what division you're playing is gone.

In theory this brings the schedules of each team competing for a wild card closer to equal. That is an argument for it.

But travel will be greatly increased and the quality of play will drop either a little or a lot because of the amount of travel, like it does in the NBA.

MLB division titles also become just as irrelevant as they are in the NBA, because each team will play only about a quarter of its games within its division. If division titles are used to determine home field advantage in the playoffs, that's not good. Why should an 85-win division winner get home field advantage over a 95-win wild card team? That just rewards the division winner for the undeserved luck of having lousy divisionmates, and punishes the wild card for the bad luck of having a 98-win team in its own division. It will make no sense in MLB just like it makes no sense in the NFL.

And, if part of the idea is to boost home attendance for teams that need a boost, I doubt this does it. From an AL team's perspective, for example, for every home series you'll now get against the Dodgers or Cubs, you'll get just as many home series against the Rockies, Pirates, Brewers, and Marlins. Better order up lots of bobbleheads, caps, and beach towels to give away when those teams come to town.

I also think it will be better than current, especially considering the new playoff format where so many teams now make the playoffs. 10 was already a lot. At least the one-game playorgohome for WC teams assessed them at their real worth. Now, with more of an even slate of games against all teams, the better teams will not jst be the ones who get to beat up on weak division opponents as much.

Dodgers now linked to Nelson Cruz who I’m pretty sure is the last active MLB player to have been coached by Casey Stengel.

Kind of confused they’re chasing a pure DH since we’ve been hearing so much chatter about how LA will spread DH duty around the team. Maybe an indication they’re considering moving someone but I can’t imagine whom and have heard no rumors.

Saw the pitching rules will be in place this year- 13 pitchers max and 15 days for options/IL stints again.

Thank goodness! Between that and the 5 option maximum- should see a whole lot less of the option train to refill bullpen spots.

Twins get Sonny Gray from the Reds. Curious move for the Reds both because they didn't get much in return and because Gray's contract is very team-friendly, not one that a team would want to dump.

Dodgers sign Hanser Alberto. As obscure as this sounds, it's actually a big depth move. Pretty good contact hitter and above average infield defense (2B, SS, 3B), but more importantly a great replacement for what they had last year. As much as Dodgers' depth gets talked about, last year they had some serious holes. Four guys they had hitting off the bench, McKinney, Neuse, Raley, and Souza Jr. put up a slash line of .163/.239/.285/.524 with a wRC+ of 44. 03-puke Hanser's wRC+ was 84, and ZiPS projects him at 1.0 WAR. Those other guys? Collectively about -2.0. Dodgers' bench improving by 3.0 WAR? Welcome to LA Hanser!

Can't say I understand that one, but presumably the Twins already had this deal with the Yankees worked out when they acquired Kiner-Falefa from the Rangers on Saturday.

I think you may well have a travel partner for your return trip. Didn't know Olson was from Gwinnett, but hate to give up a large cadre of prospects for him. If it all happens that way, he better get his average up, or else vaporizers or no vaporizers, there'll be he77 to pay.

Nats sign Nelson Cruz. Our lineup will be something....

Our pitching on the other hand sadly will be something as well.

This is going to be like that episode of The Sopranos where Tony's guys strip a sporting goods store of everything on the shelves because its owner had huge gambling debts.

Of course the Braves didn't give Freeman's agent a heads up, because they wanted to get the Olson trade done first. If Freeman had signed elsewhere first, that might have driven up the price for Olson.
