A Sun conference tourney champion snubbed by NCAA rule
Bellarmine won the Atlantic Sun Conference tourney.
That is usually good for a autobid to the NCAA Tourney.
Bellarmine will not get the bid. Regular season champion Jacksonville will.
Why ?
Bellarmine moved up from the NCAA Div II level, and is in year 2 at the Div I level. The NCAA requires a school to have been at the Div I level for 5 years to be eligible for entrance into the NCAA Tourney. They wanted to ensure that each team is "committed to the Div I philosophy and operating principles."
They wanted teams to be able to be successful and competitive at the Div I level...which Bellarmine has been thus far.
The 5 years rule is too heavy handed.
