So for the "standard" K-12, he should be graduating in May 2022 and everybody on here has been right saying he should be a senior this year, unless he was held back a year along the way or Michigan has different age cut-offs.

With his birthday falling early in the calendar year his parents might have chosen to have him start kindergarten a year later. I was 17 at graduation but my 18th was within 2 weeks.

That would be starting a full year late.

I was 17 when I graduated and my birthday was in December...So Bates would have essentially been 2 full years older than me.

Its always stupid to blame a college player for anything, and its dangerous to criticize a coach from the couch. Whatever bad comes of this season is on Penny's shoulders and whatever good happens is on the players (and the coach too). We might have 1 game left, or as many as 9, let's sit back and enjoy.

GO TIGERS!

No matter, he is a human being and a younger one at that who had a lot of pressure put on him at an early age.

Most of our resident experts were complaining about that “butthead” Marty McFly when they were his age.

I want nothing more than for Bates to be around next year wearing tiger colors - hell, he’s still growing.

Every adult in Emoni’s life failed him. Including Penny. Impatience of adults, and yeah even us fans.

Public schools have to boost attendance somehow. Losing kids left and right to private school.

There is a strong argument that he was manipulated and victimized by his father. He couldn't have made the decisions that were made on his own, considering he was a minor. Seems pretty clear his father has been setting the agenda and calling the shots, even going so far as to create a charter school and an AAU team to isolate him.

Parent are often blind to the weaknesses that they helped perpetuate. On the other hand, Emoni is a great kid. So they did that right.

VERY IMPORTANT IMO! And his bball game will continue to develop. Getting humbled early in life can be a great motivator.

Coach Brown is such an asset to the team. Not including the decades of knowledge he has accumulated, his great success in the NBA has to be a very strong selling point to potential recruits. I hope he chooses to return next year, and haven't heard from any credible sources that he's a one and done. Has there been any solid evidence that this is his first and last season?

Today the cutoff is 9/30 in TN - and has been for at least 50 years.
So you would have been a year younger than the legal minimum.
If Emoni were a HS junior this year, he would be a year older than the legal minimum - but still below the maximum.
And the truth is, many basketball players begin college a year older than they could have.
Many are 19 when they begin their college eligibility.
So Emoni is 2 years younger than many of his peers.

Meh, facts. They're not allowed here.
