He would have overlapped with Dane, right?

Nope, his first was Dane's first with us. Might have overlapped in recruiting though.

Yes, but why are so many of the transfers that we are interested in from D2 schools? I would think that we would be more interested in Ivy League graduates or P5 guys looking for more playing time. Sure, Brandon Carroll came from D2 (Florida Southern) but he was D1 (Bryant) before that. It just seems that a ton of the guys we are interested in are from lower levels.

Coach Howland, who seems to be the point person on transfers, said that during his time at Winthrop they had success picking up D2 transfers (the one who comes to mind is Adonis Arms, whom Winthrop picked up from Northwest Nazarene, and after graduating two years later from Winthrop transferred to Texas Tech where he started 22 games this season). Pat Kelsey, who was Winthrop’s head coach during Howland’s tenure, has brought the same strategy to CofC (they had a D2 transfer last year as well as a D3 transfer - third team All-CAA and All-defensive team honoree Dimitrius Underwood).
Here is the Howland quote:
‘ "We had a lot of success at Winthrop recruiting Division II kids when I was an assistant there," Howland said. "I understood the value of guys who produce at the Division II level but fall through the cracks. I watched a little of Brandon's video and I was intrigued with his athleticism.’

Thanks for the background. I can see looking for the “between the cracks” nugget here and there....but still concentrate on the good Div1 players who, for whatever reason, want a change of venue. Ivy League players looking for a good grad degree would be good fits academically. As Tribe32 likes to say - “Anybody up for the Mason School of Business?”.

The key to recruiting is to know who you are and to go after kids who know who they are. As midmajors we have to face reality. The bulk of our players will not be playing ball for a living after they graduate, so academics(especially at a W&M), is paramount. Getting those guys who have great skills, but maybe not the size or athleticism to play for money seems like a good strategy. That's why I thought the offense that was played under Shaver was such a good fit for the Tribe. It was built on strategy not athleticism and it worked. But that's probably why your defense struggled. If I were a coach at W&M, i'd go with the Princteon style offense and the Syracuse zone. A perfect combination for high skill players who aren't as athletic.
I would think your sweet spot would be to mix in transfer upperclassmen who have come to realize they aren't going pro and are focused on their degree, add in some promising freshmen who are sharpshooters and undersized guards, and a few of the DII tranfers looking to upgrade.

Hess, McDowell (?), Tarpey, Thornton, Dixon (for a while), Prewitt, Cohn, Milan, Van Vilet, Knight.... We had a pretty good thing going there for players going pro.

Not directed at you 08 but what a load of bunk. Sure some D2 guys should be playing D1 and will transfer up. But there are hundreds of players in the portal from other D1 schools just looking for a change of scenery. Do your job and find the ones that fit here. It's almost like this staff is refusing to use the portal out of stubbornness.

.....or nobody wants to come visit our dumpster fire. Let's not forget the dynamic with how Fischer is playing "his" recruits. What's he going to tell Tyler Rice when he finds a point guard who is better?

RE: CAA MBB Transfers 2022
We need the best players and coaches that can succeed at W&M.
I don't care where they come from, but how they are going to contribute here vs our (hopefully upgraded) competition. I'm not interested in formulas, but rather results. We need to see NET of 250-300 places higher than last season.
It is my opinion that we need players that would be borderline high major players (ala Pierce) and a scheme that will allow them to succeed here.

One time Tribe offer Mason Madson is in the portal. 2nd straight year entering the portal. His brother wound up at Utah.

Does that mean he'd have to sit a year, or did he not transfer after entering last year?

He entered the portal last offseason, but stayed at Cincinnati. This would be his 1st transfer.

How does Davidson do it? Maybe we should try that path.
Let’s face reality, no one is coming to W&M unless they are looking for the non basketball elements we offer.

The 0 star gym rats that Fischer and Howland prefer should be paying off any year now.
