Football season tickets have been open for purchase for a few weeks now. Curious if most of you wait a while before buying? Seems to me more season ticket package options are offered (Huskie Family as an example) if you hang tight- is this accurate?

I will be all in again this season and hope most of you are getting season packages to get some more fans at Huskie Stadium for what we hope is an exciting, successful season.

You will. When it comes to requesting money, Athletics doesn’t miss a beat. They may be late, but you will hear from them.

Got an email from an Intern that everything for renewal has been loaded into account and happy to answer any questions.

But no, nothing from HAF . I imagine they’re rolling out the same Levels and Parking per usual.

I will wait for the snail mail to come. I don’t renew online. I renew season tickets, benefits, and parking via paper checks. I will also demand paper tickets because I know better than to trust electronic tickets. Yes I’m old (but I’m smart, too!).

Season tickets and HAF donation renewals have been traditionally due at the end of April. Last year, they were late in getting the renewal packets out, so there was a delayed due date. (I believe it was in June.) I would expect another delayed renewal date this year.

The season tickets themselves were always something to look forward to. Some of the designs were quite good. Now, with them pushing for electronic tickets, the fun is gone. The paper tickets now are simple, generic Ticketmaster tickets. As long as I can get any paper tickets, I'm fine because I will not accept electronic tickets. If there is one thing I have leaned about Athletics over the years is that if something can go wrong, it generally will. Plus, I usually bring other people with me to the games, and I like to hand them their own tickets. Plus, if I can't make it to a game and want to give my tickets to someone else, there are less headaches for me and them to just give them the paper tickets. If something should go wrong electronically (and it certainly can), the paper ticket is evidence that you've paid to get into the game and sit in a reserved seat.

Players were seated at a table handing out the packets and there were speeches by coaches and players. It was a nice little event, complete with appetizers and drinks. Ah, "the good old days"!

Yep. Mrs. GBF and I were talking about this the other night. It was paired with the alumni basketball game/weekend too. Mrs. and I would always attend that.

I remember Larry English being a speaker at the HASF event one year. Those were excellent.

Another ball dropped by the department.

One of my daughters got Larry's autograph at that event. Still have it. Also PJ's if I remember correctly. Larry's autograph might carry more weight because of his reality TV show work than his football career!

Yes, just a few years ago in 2019, the season tickets were epic - historic moments, cool designs, professionally made.

Now all sports organizations are moving away from that. It sucks.

I still have my season tickets but being an NIU football ticket holder has been completely marginalized. I can’t name a single perk to keeping them. NIU Athletics has been operating like a low brow D2 program for many years now and I do not see that trend stopping anytime soon.

What ever happened to spending money to make money? NIU creates zero incentive to invest in season tickets.

I completely agree. Over the years, I have been a huge proponent of marketing. Spend some money to make money. I am a big believer in marketing gimmicks such as gifts with purchase. Athletics was doing this for a short while before giving up. Toledo does this extremely well. As an example, at one time they gave out a set of Rocket drinking glasses for season ticket holders. It just may result in more season ticket sales with some aggressive advertising. And they should not have trouble getting a sponsor (like Northwestern Medicine) to pay for them. All it takes is a brain power and willingness to do it. Treating your customers like they’re important means more than sending an e-mail asking for money and then opening the cash register.

I prefer my milk delivered by the milk truck. Who knows what happens in these supermarkets. Milk from the truck is closer to the farm.

And I only use a dial telephone!

There's even less incentive to buying season tickets when you might get two, maybe three Saturday home games. NIU ends up selling the weekday November tickets for dirt cheap.

Season tix is not about the money for me anymore. I find the season tickets cheaper than a game to see the Bulls or Blackhawks with dinner, parking, drinks etc...

I took paper last year and was disappointed they were generic ticketmaster tickets rather than the normal cool ones we had in the past.

even when NIU gave out things with season tickets it was one per account, not per ticket. So who gets to wear the scarf this week, who gets to use the keychain this week?

It's a cost saving measure since they are pushing season ticket holders to use electronic tickets. Thus, with more people using electronic tickets, there is less of a need for the paper tickets. Printing custom tickets would cost even more with a lower quantity. I am okay with the generic tickets just as long as I can get the hard tickets. For all I care, they could print the tickets on hot dog wrappers (which would make the tickets incredibly rare and valuable)!
