Kent State vs. Miami Redhawks & Quarterfinals
The Flashes and Redhawks will tip sometime in the four o'clock hour on Thursday. Miami enters the MAC Tournament with a conference record of 8-12 and an overall mark of 14-17. Waaaay back in November the Redhawks knocked off Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Since then they have endured two 5 game losing streaks yet have avoided going straight down the toilet.

The leading scorer is Lorain product Dae Dae Grant. The 6'2 junior averages 17 points a night. Next up is 5'8 senior Mekhi Lairy who averages 13 points a game and leads the Redhawks in steals. The other double digit scorer is 6'7 5th year senior Dalonte Brown. Brown is also the team's leading rebounder. There is some size along the baseline, but not many 6'7+ guys offer much as far as minutes and production.

The College olde and grande is the top half of the MAC in scoring at about 75 per game, but they are in the lower half defensively, giving up 73 each time out. I think the Flashes can and will exceed 73 and hold Miami under 75.

Kent State 76
Miami (Oh) 69
Carry and Hamilton combine for 40

The other matchups include:

Toledo vs. Central Michigan @ 11:00
Buffalo vs. Akron approximately 1:30

Ohio vs. Ball State approximately 6:30

I like an opponent that's led by guards. Our individual guard defense is the strength of our defense. As long as Carry and Jacobs stay out of foul trouble it should be a very tough matchup for their guards.

RE: Kent State vs. Miami Redhawks & Quarterfinals
The MAC tourny has been conducted in many different ways over the years. The strangest was in 1989, I think it was. They had the winner of the morning game between the last two seeds on the first day of the tournament having to play the #1 seed in the final game on the same day! Playing two games in one day was not that uncommon back in the 1940s and 1950s among high schools in some states but was pretty much obsolete for quite a while. If memory serves me well, they ended up changing the format before the tournament so that wouldn't happen by adding a fourth day.

RE: Kent State vs. Miami Redhawks & Quarterfinals
Here is what I see going down Thursday:

Toledo 79
CMU 64
Toledo pulls away in the final 8 minutes or so

Buffalo 66
Akron 64
Game of the day. Bulls prove to be to physical for the haiku writing Zips. Guess they should have sold their souls to the devil too.

Kent State 76
Miami 69
Love and Honor to Miami! College olde and grande!

Ball State 78
Ohio U 61
I can't help but think of a song by Soul Asylum circa 1994

What a strange article. "...despite dominating regular season"? They won by one game! No mention Kent State.

I’m surprised Kent is only 138 in the ken.Pom.. of the top 5 teams they are only ahead of Akron (151).

It's looking at the entire season, not the last twelve games. And the entire season wasn't all that great with some pretty bad home losses.

True, there were some bad home losses, but 21-9 (.700) is the best since Ford's second season, as is 16-4 (.800) in MAC play. I wouldn't say "wasn't all that great". And anyway, why put odds at winning a tournament based upon the entire season? Shouldn't it be based upon how the teams look currently? I don't think Kent State should be considered the favorite, but based upon how teams looked at the end of the season I would think they have as good a chance as anyone.

I agree. I didn't mean to sound disrespectful as the team and coaches have my respect for their excellent play and coming back from adversity. But, if we're talking rankings, I understand why Kent is in the 100s, because of the bad losses early in the season. There was the neutral site loss to ETSU (15-17) and home losses to Southern (17-13 but really weak schedule), Central Michigan (7-22) and Northern Illinois (9-21). Kent really had no great wins, nor did the entire MAC.

I'd say that Kent is a second 50 team that was hurt by the bad losses early in the year. I wonder if any sites do rankings over the last ten games. That would be a better indicator of where things stand.

Bopol, what really struck me about that article was saying that Toledo "dominated" the regular season. Sure, they won the conference and had a nice w-l record, but when a team wins a conference by only one game and didn't clinch sole ownership of first place until the final day, using the term "dominating" doesn't really fit.

Eh, I’m going to say that Ethan Yang probably knows as much about the MAC men’s basketball conference season as I do about Australian rugby. And, in case it isn’t clear, I don’t know squat about Australian rugby.

Agree, that's what I assumed. I'm sure many of the people who "report" on college sports just have a cursory knowledge, at best, of what is happening below the P5 type level.

You are giving them too much credit. Their knowledge of the P5 level is probably cursory also

Good point, Burden. Sports reporting in general has definitely gown downhill over the years.

Wow, Toledo got lucky. CMU could have won that.
