RE: 2022 EMU FB Spring Ball Thread
So right now we have Powell Smith McCoy and Kaminski as QB. Aaron Jackson has played QB. We added two true frosh as walk ONS that played QB in high school. If Powell gets hurt it will be a long 2022 season.

Yes. We have a 1st string QB and a backup with very, very limited experience. That is risky.

Last year we had a 1a and 1b QB and that had a different set of problems.

Basically the best plan is to pray for the qBs good health.

I think we'll be OK with Powell and Smith. Just need to keep them healthy. Hoping that Smith gets his share of PT.

Wonder who the 3rd sting guy will be. McCoy looks like a good athlete but he's a true freshman and Kaminski is a walk-on with a few years of practice under his belt.

Who are the two freshmen walk-ons?

Baron could conceivably come back.

If Powell and Smith go down we're in trouble but how many teams can lose their top to QBs to injury and NOT be in trouble?

Jeremiah Drake who played QB in high school but slotted for TE and Cole Mcelvany of Milan who I believe was All State at QB but slotted for LB

Bandaid senior QB's again under CC. Glass, Weigers Bryant, now Powell...... Im hoping Viotto changes CC's mind and he becomes a QB we develop but that won't be until even he is a redshirt frosh at best which means May would have been a great fit to play this upcoming season as a redshirt soph.

Perhaps I'm still bitter about May leaving. I really still believe he is a guy you can win with.

I just don't understand how you can build a program with bandaids

Maybe May is just not talented enough? Let’s see where he transfers and whether or not he wins a starting job in a season or two…..

I don't know about that, Lucky. He was good enough to be recruited by CC's staff. My issue is that it seems like we always look for a bandaid qb through JUCO or portal and while some have been ok, none have been good enough to get us to the top tier. Wiegers was ok, Glass got ejected for punching a guy in a bowl game, Bryant was average and then bailed on us. I just wonder if we invested in a younger guy like May, what would happen is he had 2 to 3 years of game experience. May is good and I hope they know what they are doing. Feels like another 7-5 season which would be fine but I'd rather be 7-5 going into the 2023 season with a guy like May who has a season of play under his belt versus starting over again woth going with Powell

I hear you but apparently he did not beat our Smith for the #2.

I assume spring ball was wide open with no returning starters (1a or 1b).

I'm surprised he did not progress better. I really like his 'tape.' Not a big QB but throws a very nice ball.

This tells me that their prospects of getting meaningful playing time in the near future were not very good.

I saw that another OL is also in the portal. I forgot his name but it's the guy that had transferred in from a lower level a year ago.

Both are very, very large men. I'm not a big fan of really tall guys playing the OL unless they are really basketball players in pads.

All of this explains we are looking at JUCOs and transfers on the OL. Smith signed with Indiana before coming to us.

This is perfectly said! Look at RB also as an example! Very similar last season for that position as well! I'm glad Boone didn't transfer after last season! We've two very winnable OOC games in EKY, and UMASS! At Louisiana won't be easy, and AZ St is in the bottom third of the PAC 12! If we go 2-2, and go 4-4 in the MAC, we're sitting at 6-6! After year NINE........We've to win at Akron, beat Toledo, or C Mich at home to go 7-5! Akron game will tell me alot, they're currently the worst team in the MAC, have a new coach, and lost a ton of players! CC, needs to deliver A 7-5 season, and win A bowl game! This's my two cents!

Gosh I was so excited when we landed May! Nice kid, HS legend, Ohio born, what was not to like? That said, I felt the same about Grissom and Jackson when we recruited them as QB's. I think we would all agree that neither of them were MAC capable at the position. We are not at practice everyday, why would Smith ascend over him on the depth chart?

Hey, I am not dismissing the prior posts about Creighton developing a QB, nor am I ignoring the fact that a sub, Charlie Batch turned out to be possibly the best EMU QB ever. Still, I suspect that May did not have what it takes.

Phenomenal points as usual Jerry, but how many freshman have started, or had a real shot since CC has been coach? Roback, and Hutchinson for one season! CC, is always looking for a quick fix/bandaide lately! He brought in Weigers, Pensyl, Glass, Bryant, Powell to name a few JUCO's/transfers! Glass was the only bright spot in my opinion! Look at the best 3 QB's in EMU football history, Church, Roback, and Batch.......all were freshman, and grew with the program as well! I would like to see A 3 year starter!

So how does this work, are players told where they stand in the pecking order? I guess I am asking if coaches are upfront and encourage such players to leave or okay that they hang around?
