With the recent changes in college football plus some crazy luck, Pitt has found itself on the right side of these changes. It's sad for the world, due to deaths and lockdowns (and so on); however, Covid has actually benefitted a program like Pitt, due to the Covid Redshirt. These next two years I expect more 5th & 6th year Sr's in the starting lineup. Then you add in the Transfer Portal and NIL, and Pitt is able to level the playing field some. With the exception of the QB that ended up in Texas, from OSU, Pitt was able to get a kid in the portal that they wanted (out of 3 or 4 I believe), then we picked up Mumpfield from the MAC.

With that said, historically, Pitt has been a solid program to a power. Went through a couple of decades of mediocrity, but that somehow really hasn't hurt Pitt as it was able to join the ACC, as opposed to being left behind. I think Pitt will ultimately land in one of the Big 2 conferences, with the B1G being the most likely. I can't dismiss the fact that Pitt does NOT add a television market to the B1G, and I won't pretend that it does; however, Pitt does help as far as games that can be nationally televised games; IE vs PSU; vs Maryland; vs Michigan; vs OSU. The latter two is more based on their merit more-so than Pitt's merit. PSU is a given due to the historical rivalry, and Maryland has all the potential to be the Backyard Brawl Pt 2. Then there's games made for regional TV like vs Rutgers and vs Michigan St.. Then if you add Notre Dame to this collection of schools for a potential 7 team division, then that's easily a regional to nationally televised game on a yearly basis.

Perhaps Pitt would ultimately be left behind. I don't think that's up for Pitt to decide and I highly doubt that the Pa Government would stand up for Pitt either. I also realize that the P12 schools, especially USC and Oregon are sexier picks that Pitt atm as well. But I'd think there's room for P12 schools, the same way there's room for Pitt in the B1G.

Pitt and VT have similar prospects, IMO. I could see either/both going to the Big Ten, SEC, or whatever the 3rd Eastern power conference turns out to be (ACC? Big XII? other?)

I agree.
There will be a third eastern "power" conference although it may be a reduced power conference behind the SEC and the B1G along with a balancing 4th conference in the west.
You’re thinking of the Big 12 East division.

With the P2 at a combined 40+, there will be only one other “power” conference of current P5 leftovers.

There’s unlikely to be enough ACC schools of value left for it to remain. The 4-8 that are not included in the P2 will be divided up, with a few possibly in the American.

No, I was talking about the ACC.
