Fun fact: The distance between Southern Connecticut State University and Connecticut's northern border is less than 60 miles.

But only 3 miles to Long Island Sound so aptly named.

I looked into this logo and wordmark just for any more ammunition against our recent rebrand (for the record, I hate it), and it seems to have been designed by Phoenix Design Works. If that URL isn't good for you, you'll be able to see the whole list at this direct link to the image. Why on God's green Earth they decided to make a JPG of non-specific text for their own marketing, I do not know. This firm also did work for the Alamo Bowl, the Peach Bowl, and dozens of universities and other sports-adjacent institutions. No idea how much involvement any of these engagements included, though. As a refresher, our current branding was done by Torch Creative.

From the looks of this photo, Southern Connecticut's mascot -- Otus the Owl, named after the genus of Old World Scops owls -- has had over the years similar numbers of awful "what were they thinking" iterations as our Sammy:

Otus' history at Southern Connecticut is told here: https://go.southernct.edu/125/timeline/ and here: https://dailynutmeg.com/2015/11/18/new-h...ent-redux/

SCSU's owl mascot dates back to the early 1950s, but it wasn't until 2010 that it was given a name: Otus, sometimes misspelled 'Otis' as in the image linked above.

(Note: In 1948, when the school was known as New Haven State Teachers College, the teams were cheered as “The Educators” or "to a lesser degree, The Teachers.” I suspect that if JP had been calling their games, he'd surely have called them "The Scholars." :-) )

We Texans find it charming that a state the size of a good county would have not only four directional schools (Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northwestern), but a Central as well.

As a CT high schooler southern and central were popular destinations. I didn't know that Eastern or Northwestern existed -- and only knew that Western existed as grandad was the Dean at their Ancel (sp?) school of business, and dad called in to teach when senior was short faculty. I once picked up Art Laffer from the airport with them. They also both did tours at Southern after that -- and both of those after the elder was President of U of New Haven (which was started in a building on the Yale Campus and then moved to West Haven).

Connecticut is actually bigger than most, if not all, Texas counties (may be one or two bigger out west) but Harris County is larger than Rhode Island.

Population-wise, Connecticut is well ahead of many west and south Texas counties, such as Loving County, pop. 64.

One of my favorites!

Years ago, when Houston newspapers printed the county-by-county election totals, I was always intrigued by Loving's single-digit vote counts.

When I drove out to California to a new job, I made sure to make a detour into Mentone, which was chock full of historical markers, if not people. :-)

Loving is the smallest county in the US, by population.

I looked up a list of Texas counties and their populations. There were several in the triple digits and a lot in the quadruple digits.

A very good movie set in a small town in Texas is "Dancer, Texas, Pop. 81".

RE: Hoo Knew?
There was a very recent article in Texas Monthly about the Emergency Medical Services in Loving County. I know that sounds odd but there is a huge amount of drilling going on out there and, consequently, a tremendous need for EMTs, ambulance personnel, etc. They see some horrific injuries. Severe burns. Orthopedic injuries. Lots of severe hand injuries. And they are a LONG WAY from any hospital or specialized medical care. As I understand it, some of the energy companies that have a big presence in the county are helping to subsidize the medical teams. And the medical personnel rotates about every 2 weeks, relying on staff from the urban trauma centers.
Not the wild, Wild West. But close.

Do the folks there have more on the ball than Mentone, AL? That's a trip back in time.
