So Byington has already broken the ice and said we will see changes on the roster.
Who is it going to be?

I’ll guess 3 guys transfer out and not all by there own choosing.

Jalen Hodge - was the leading 3pt % on the team at 44% but struggled to get minutes playing only 14 per game. He is a one trick pony that could start at a low majority he wants more PT.

Jalen Stinson - was overmatched as a Freshman and only played bits of 4 games all year. 11 of 13 players got significant PT this year, not him.

Julien Wooden - plays so much smaller than his size. It is a shame too because I see a lot of unrealized potential in him. Maybe he would do better in a system that encouraged him to play in the paint most of the time and only drift out to the perimeter occasionally. Basically, the opposite of how he plays now. Also, he is the only player on the roster coach didn’t recruit. Also, he didn’t start the last 4 games after starting all year.

Just guesses

Whoever it is, we need shooters that can actually make baskets consistently.

My guess was same as yours. I don’t think Hodge or Wooden fit By’s system......and I assumed the Freshman didn’t pan out since we saw 0 minutes.

RE: Hoops dead pool
I think Hodge graduating and transferring seems like the most likely one. Other than that, Stinson and Wooden don't seem like bad guesses. Wooden is the lone Rowe recruit that's still here so wouldn't be too surprising to see him pushed out or see him want out while Stinson obviously was unable to get on the floor even when the injuries started piling up.

It's not very "JMU basketball" to avoid having any that are more surprising and disappointing than these though so I hope losing one or more of these guys is as bad as it gets. I really like Hodge and Wooden but they wouldn't be real surprising, and we haven't seen enough of Stinson for losing him to be that disappointing. I'm not even gonna bring on the bad juju of guessing one we'd really hate to see go, but I know who I'd guess. Pure guess though, he got screwed by the refs frequently and looked frustrated at times, wouldn't be surprised if he has a bit of a bad taste in his mouth from his time at JMU so far. If he does, I hope the conference move is enough of a change of scenery for him.

What is interesting is that JMU had 2 of the top 8 3pt % shooters in the CAA in #8 Falden and #2 Hodge. They didn’t get as many attempts as other good 3pt shooters in the CAA though. In fact, JMU took fewer 3pt shots than all CAA teams except Drexel and Northeastern. Of course, we saw many 3pt attempts from the wrong guys as if everyone had a green light.

Nobody has mentioned Morse yet, but the team would be better off without his gunner style that coach Byington has refused to rein in. Of the 50 starters in the CAA, Morse ranked 48th in FG%. A turrible 36.5%. And he took twice as many shots as anyone on the team. 01-wingedeagle Shame on him for being a low IQ offensive player and Shame on coach for allowing it without any consequences.
I don’t think he is going anywhere.

RE: Hoops dead pool
I'm not going to make guesses about individual players, but I will say one of the team's problems is that too many people who have the same strengths and weaknesses.

Amadi and Sule, both of whom I like, are a bit undersized. However, I'm not sure how either would do next to a true under-the-basket big man.

More concerning is the fact that the majority of the best returning players don't shoot all that well. A lineup of, say, Amadi, Molson, Edwards, Vado, and Ihenacho doesn't spread the floor. I keep waiting for Strickland, already the heart and soul of the defense, to find his range (his jumper is too pretty to not go in), or maybe McConnell is the guy who can take some of the load off Vado (his jumper is even prettier).

I will say this about Wooden- his attributes are different than those of the other players on the team, so he adds some versatility that would otherwise be missing.

RE: Hoops dead pool
The players I would not want to lose…
Amadi, Sule, Ihenacho. Those guys are big pieces of a winning team. Would love to see JMU get a legit big man and then watch Amadi flourish as an active 4 without always being the underdog in the paint. Sule feels like a great 6th man that can come off the bench and play with fire whenever a big needs a breather. Ihenacho should be the starting PG and run everything through him to get the ball out of Morse’s hands.

Will JMU be able to get a shooter as good and as versatile as Falden? I don’t know. That was a strong get last year.
After year 1 the roster changed dramatically including one and done players in Mensah, Taylor, and Rowe leftovers in Harvey, and Christmas.

I think the off season Free Agency period is going to be active again this year. Definitely need some big bodies to go with the other 9 guards.

RE: Hoops dead pool
one item that has only semi being addressed is how well these pieces fit in Byington's scheme of positionless offense. Some old schools have lamented the lack of the pick and role and some traditional beef in the paint....but it's my understanding that is not what his offense calls for and he has not had enough good recruiting cycles to truly make that roster happen ( or maybe seasons to truly get his players to bye-in and understand the concept). The low post back to the basket is gone, and the current metrics say it is not coming back anytime soon. You will be sacrificing some boards with smaller more athletic bodies. But in this data driven world, it seems to be working and more teams are converting to some version of this offense. Maybe we are not giving proper value to individual players under this new reality and what they bring to the overall cohesiveness to what Coach By is trying to accomplish. Doesn't mean we don't need a big to help, but he better be able to do more than stand in the paint clogging things up.

(Christmas would have been an excellent fit in this system)

Molson may not be back. Torn knee ligaments is serious stuff and he's got to have sufficient rehab time. Is it worth it to him for one more year? Will he ready in time? If he does return will he end up being a Michael Vinson 2.0?
I suspect Hodge will be gone in addition to at least one of the freshmen.

RE: Hoops dead pool
Thought Molson was pretty big time for our level (when he wasn't shooting 3s). If he's on track to heal up nicely, I'd like to have him back.
I'm thinking one of the two freshman guards who rarely played and Hodge would be the likely candidates. As much as Wooden can frustrate me, I'd rather have his known quantity than an unknown. We already were thin in the frontcourt. Losing Wooden would keep us still w/ only 3 (including the likely raw incoming freshman). If Byington already has someone in mind, like a solid P5 guy that buried on a talented depth chart, then I could stomach losing JW.

Didn't he have a chance last season and underwhelmed?

Not sure why he didn't see the floor at Schlongwood this season

I didn't realize he fell off the face of the earth. Curious what the story is there. 6-6 at 225 with a good all-around game and touted as an impact player coming in to Longwood from their media reports. Did not play and I can't find an injury mentioned. Still listed with team though. ???

I thought he would flourish with Coach By over time and thought he was a loss that would be hard replace for us when he went into the portal.

What is the timeline ? Few days for coaches to have their meetings and then bring in the players for their meetings. I would not imagine more than a couple weeks before we get who is staying and who is in the portal

RE: Hoops dead pool
Coach said he would have conversations with players over the next one to two weeks. Then we’ll know.
He wasn’t shy about saying he needs to make some moves. The X factor is which players think they need to move on even if he doesn’t. One thing we haven’t seen him recruit in 2 years is a stud player. He has brought in many good players, some whiffs, but none have been great.
If you can’t get a gamechanger with a shiny new $100 million arena, then you never will.

It would be interesting to see his file of players he has recruited over the last 3 or 4 years, but couldn’t land. Some of those may be looking for new scenery and entertain a look at JMU now.

Christmas and Wooden are pretty much clones of each other, game-wise. Big, athletic bodies who don't want to go anywhere near the paint/high-traffic/possible contact areas. Both brought little to the defensive end of the floor, and neither shoots a high enough percentage to justify jump shots being the majority of their attempts.

Years ago, both would have been taught how to play with their back to the basket, but today's game seems to have little use for that.
