Sounds a lot like the famed gentlemen's agreement that prevents Florida State and Clemson from joining the SEC per the wishes of Florida and South Carolina (but, oddly enough, agreeing gentlemen were nowhere to be found when Texas applied just last year).

Please don't even repeat that internet lie. Machen and (I think) Pastides wanted Florida State and Clemson in the SEC in 2010 and were willing to sponsor their membership. They feared more expansion would eventually jeopardize these 2 games upon which each school's donation ticket priority systems were built. Hell, Florida sponsored FSU in '90.

Clay Travis, half assed moron that he is, pushed this crock.

Mike Slive asked for the "gentlemen's agreement" to satisfy the renegotiation clause in the ESPN contract which required 2 new markets and he asked those 2 presidents to delay their sponsorship until the requirements were met and he promised the presidents moving forward no such stipulations would be made again and that only profitability would need to be met.

So, it was never a blackball, it was issued not to keep FSU and Clemson out, but for everyone to get a bigger raise. Georgia had been directed by state politicians in 2010 to sponsor Ga Tech. To my knowledge only KY had no interest in another state school.

I guess East Carolina goes in the Virginia Tech conference?

Yes. Forgot them. Thanks.

It’s interesting that Duke, KU, and UNC are clumped together.

From a revenue standpoint, UConn and Temple would not be out of place in the Big 12. What they get for their money, though, makes it unlikely for them to punch a P5 ticket.

In looking at the revenue numbers for some of these P5 schools, at what point do we see schools lease out their revenue programs or even AD?

Tech could be the lone Southern school in the ACC outside UNC, UVA and Duke that wouldn't go full throttle on an SEC invite. Might GT's administration and key alumni be fine competing in a second-tier league as opposed to entering the SEC rat race and facing a perpetual losing battle?

NC State, hmmmm ... Often wondered why the Wolfpack haven't fared better since Norm Sloan's and Jim Valvano's bookend national championships less than 10 years apart. if there is one "P5" school that might most benefit by joining a different conference and escaping the shadow of its neighbor(s) and rival(s), it could well be NC State.

I agree, and wonder if GT would want to come BACK to the SEC knowing that. I have no insight into the Yellowjacket fanbase, but I wonder if they might not prefer to go full-throttle on academics, trumpet the value of the CIC, and head for the B1G.

NC State I agree on as well, I think they could really blossom in the SEC away from UNC and making SEC money. From what I've gathered from some of our NC posters though, they may not be allowed to separate from UNC due to state politics & control. Hopefully that won't be an issue if things go that way and both schools are headed for greener pastures and big paydays.
Good points from both of you. I have long thought NCSU would do better separated from the "NC 4" of the ACC. I believe NCSU would be a good SEC fit.

GT has had revenue and coaching issues that can't all be blamed on ACC affiliation. Clemson, a couple hours up I-85, succeeds well.

Saying GT's problem is being too urban and being more academically focused, is too simplistic. GT has a rich athletic tradition that needs a shot of adrenaline, now and then.

SDSU’s going to be next to Utah and Oregon State within a year or two. Finally having their own stadium is going to be transformative in more ways than one.

A pretty good revenues and expenses database, with some advanced reporting tools, maintained by the Knight Foundation here:

Along with UVA. Those are four schools JRsec* has said would be of interest to both the B1G and SEC if/when the BB tournament is freed from NCAA mismanagement.

I'm trying to play with the custom report. I would like to pull just total revenue with multiple years and include FCS schools.

There are plenty of threads here going back over each school's numbers year over year. You'll have to search Enter Sandman's posts or mine. To get FCS numbers you'll need to go to the Equity in Athletics website and look up athletic revenue by school.

Mine look at the numbers by P5 conference. Sandman's look at the FBS.

RE: Total Revenues by School
IIRC, when the Catholic 7 from the Big East formed the nucleus of the current Big East conference, didn’t the Catholic 7 give up their NCAA tournament credits to the AAC to keep the Big East name? Wouldn’t that increase the revenue of USF, UC and UConn? Plus when Syracuse, BC, UL, RU and WVU left for P5 conferences, those three schools were getting those NCAA credits as extraneous revenue. (Temple may have received a cut of that pie also, but I am unsure on that point). And add in the exit fees, those three (maybe four) schools were the recipients of income that wasn’t normally expected. Those were the rules at the time.

And Virginia, as well. Those are four schools that JRsec* has mentioned as potential targets for both the Big Ten or the SEC. Adding these to Kentucky would give the SEC the top four bluebloods in basketball without adding undue risk to the records of the SEC FB powers.

Colorado took out an $18,000,000 loan from the PAC to cover expenses due to losses based on clueless Covid regulations in Boulder? Wow, the idiocy of the school leadership is stunningly bad.

The SEC made a huge 1 time additional revenue distribution for Covid, and then had everyone sign a short-term GoR specifically to address that distribution. Covid impacted everybody.
